When Nicole Kidman announced Jordan Peele as the winner of the Oscar for best original screenplay for his work on Get Out, filmmaker John Singleton cheered and clapped inside the Dolby Theatre's lobby bar which was filled with guests who erupted in applause along with him. Singleton earned a nomination in the same category in 1992 for Boyz n the Hood, and offered to put in perspective for The Hollywood Reporter.
"I'm so happy, man," Singleton said. "He went and made a genre movie and he made the best genre movie that he could make, and he ended up with three Oscar nominations. Now, he won an Oscar — it's beautiful."
Emotions aside, Singleton said the win helps prove a larger point about diversity in Hollywood. "Jordan started as a performer and he found the next level to create and tell stories in a different way. We're in a time in the business where that is allowed to happen. When I was nominated, it was considered out-of-the-box and different. Now it's the new normal. The black presence in the film industry is finally catching up to the music industry, and that makes me feel like America is more American."
