Joe Biden has secured 270 electoral votes in the 2020 U.S. Election, defeating Donald Trump to become the next American president, according to the Associated Press.
The victory comes with Biden projected to secure Pennsylvania’s electoral votes, pushing him to a total of 284, compared to Trump’s 214.
Polls originally closed Nov. 3, but due to a historic voting turnout and an increase in mail-in ballots amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a projected winner was finally announced Saturday.
According to the Associated Press, Trump will not concede to Biden, because he will proceed with unspecified legal challenges in an effort to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election.
“Our campaign will start prosecuting our case in court to ensure election laws are fully upheld and the rightful winner is seated,” said Trump in a statement.
Trump continues to allege that there’s been widespread fraud and misconduct throughout the election process, but no evidence has been provided. There’s particularly been an emphasis on scrutinizing mail-in ballots, which have helped Biden secure a lead in key states such as Pennsylvania.
Following the projection on Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated Biden and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris.
