NEW YORK (Reuters) - A senior U.S. intelligence official said on Tuesday that Chinese cyber activity in the United States had risen in recent months, targeting critical infrastructure in what may be attempts to lay the groundwork for future disruptive attacks. “You worry they are prepositioning against critical infrastructure and trying to be able to do the types of disruptive operations that would be the most concern,” National Security Agency official Rob Joyce said at a Wall Street Journal cybersecurity conference. Joyce, a former White House cyber adviser for President Donald Trump, did not elaborate. A spokeswoman for the NSA said Joyce was referring to digital attacks against the U.S. energy, financial, transportation and healthcare sectors. The comments are notable because U.S. complaints about Chinese hacking have to date focused on espionage and intellectual property theft, not efforts to disrupt critical infrastructure. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-cyb...

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has blamed Russia for what is being described as the worst-ever cyber espionage attack on the US government.
"We can say pretty clearly that it was the Russians that engaged in this activity," Mr Pompeo said on Friday.
President Trump downplayed the attack's severity - saying it was "under control" - and cast doubt on Russia's role, hinting at Chinese involvement.
The hack, targeting software made by US firm SolarWinds, was found last week.
However, it had been going on for months. Russia has denied any involvement in the attack.
Among the US agencies targeted was the office that manages nuclear weapons.
Steve, Did Trump hire Pompeo? The Trump administration is sending mixed signals to the world and that is NOT good because that was Pompeo's job to know so, he can report that information back to the president, not the other way around.
Did you know that The Department of Treasury, Commerce, The Stae Department, Homeland Security, The Energy Department, The National Nuclear Security and our Defense Information System Agency?
All of this happened under Trump's watch and he still has NOT said anything to Putin.

Ron, the threat actor is UNC2452. That's the attribution given by the company that discovered it, FireEye. UNC2452 could be anyone at this point. I and the President say it's China. We're under attack by China, this is no game. First a genetically enhanced virus was unleashed on us and now China has our infrastructure by the short and curlies.

Ron, Pompeo and Barr aren't Techies. The Techies aren't willing to say who it is with certainty. Here's another example:
FireEye, SolarWinds, Microsoft, and other sources all have pointed to a foreign nation-state as the source of this prolonged attack.
"SolarWinds has just been made aware our systems experienced a highly sophisticated, manual supply chain attack on SolarWinds Orion Platform software builds for versions 2019.4 HF 5 through 2020.2.1, released between March 2020 and June 2020," SolarWindows said in a security advisory. "We have been advised this attack was likely conducted by an outside nation state and intended to be a narrow, extremely targeted, and manually executed attack, as opposed to a broad, system-wide attack."
Though FireEye hasn't yet confirmed or identified the source of the compromise, many are pointing the finger directly at Russia. Sources told the Washington Post that the Russian hackers responsible are known by the nicknames APT29 or Cozy Bear and are part of Russia's SVR foreign intelligence service. The same group has been tagged as the source behind a recent attack against FireEye itself.
"APT29, the group attributed to this past week's FireEye breach—a company known for its due diligence—is now known to have compromised both the Departments of Treasury and Commerce," Rosa Smothers, former CIA cyber threat analyst and now an senior VP with KnowBe4, told TechRepublic. "APT29 most successfully uses spear phishing to gain access to a network; from there they escalate permissions to expand into the network."
In a post shared on Facebook, the Russian government denied any culpability in the attack, calling the claims unfounded attempts by the US media to blame Russia for attacks against US government bodies.
