1800 – 1960: AFRICAN AMERICANS IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA The sunshine state has a rich and colorful history. For hundreds of years the state has attracted dreamers, opportunists, inventors and fortune-seekers. In order for African Americans to build a community in Southwest Florida they had to overcome slavery, segregation and prejudice. Because of local heroes in the early years, doors were opened for local African Americans to flourish. Now, a special group of people have untold stories to tell about endurance, motivation, determination and inspiration to teach us what life was like before the time of integration. What are African American documentaries? This list of African American documentary films includes films that were made by African Americans, as well as films on the topic of African Americans. Films marked with an asterisk (*) are specifically about the Civil Rights Movement. 1 1930s. Who was the first African American born free? The first African American child born free in the English colonies, William Tucker, is baptized in Virginia. The first enslaved Africans arrive in the Dutch Colony of New Amsterdam (now New York City) with the Dutch West India Company. Who were the first Africans in Hispaniola? The first Africans arrive in Hispaniola with Christopher Columbus. They are free persons. The Spanish king allows the introduction of enslaved Africans into Spain's American colonies. The first enslaved Africans arrive in Hispaniola. Thirty Africans accompany Vasco Nunez de Balboa on his trip to the Pacific Ocean. What side did African Americans participate in the Revolutionary War? African Americans participate on the Patriot side in the earliest battles of the Revolution, Concord, Lexington and Bunker Hill. Two of the first of these Patriot soldiers were Peter Salem at the Battle of Concord and Salem Poor at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
