Trump rally triples down on Arizona audit lies in new phase of a damaging legacy

The rally proved the former president's commitment to turbocharging the GOP's agenda to unravel voting rights.

By Zeeshan Aleem, MSNBC Opinion Columnist

Donald Trump spoke at the third campaign-style rally of his post-presidency in Phoenix on Saturday night and was, well, completely himself: The nearly two-hour speech alternated between fantastical self-aggrandizement and falsehood-packed rants about his perceived political adversaries. He took aim at Hillary Clinton, Mitch McConnell, trans athletes, the Green New Deal — which he charmingly nicknamed "the Green New B------" and ludicrously claimed would result in the abolition of windows — Hunter Biden, China and many others.

But there were an overriding focus and a purpose to his rambling remarks — to argue that Republican efforts in Arizona and elsewhere to cast doubt on the results of 2020 election results were part of a "revolution" needed to ensure the "survival of our nation." And as Trump spoke before a roaring audience of loyalists and a wide set of Arizona Republican politicians keen to ride on the coattails of his popularity, Trump's agenda to triple down on his election fraud lies looked like more than just an attempt to burnish his legacy. It showed his commitment and capacity to turbocharge the GOP's agenda to unravel voting rights and underscored how his ability to do lasting damage to the republic is far from over.

Most Republicans running for statewide office in Arizona attended the event, which was organized by Turning Point Action, a right-wing activist organization, and called the "Rally to Protect Our Elections!" A number of them spoke before Trump took the stage, and they clearly considered endorsing or condoning the false claim that Arizona's election results were rigged against Trump as an essential political maneuver. Steve Gaynor, a candidate for governor, fired up the crowd, saying: "This has to be fixed. This can't happen again — there are a million Republicans in our state who believe the election was rigged." Jim Lamon, who is running for the Senate, declared, "There were serious problems with the 2020 election." The crowd directed "lock her up" chants at Arizona's secretary of state, Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, who had said before the rally that Trump should "accept [the election result] and move on."

Of course, none of this hysteria about rigged election results is based in reality. Arizona's presidential ballots have already been certified and audited, with President Joe Biden having beaten Trump in the state by about 10,400 votes. Republican hopefuls at the rally were instead discussing evidence-free conspiracy theories and questions raised by an additional "forensic audit" organized by Republican state senators and conducted by an outside contractor. The chosen contractor, Cyber Ninjas, is a small computer security firm that had no experience examining election data before 2020, although its CEO has spread false election conspiracy theories. Not surprisingly, Cyber Ninja's audit has been widely discredited by election experts.

It was a great rally and a lot of truth was told. For once though I'll be looking forward to the 1/6 non-commision SOUNDBITES so I don't have to waste my time watching it. The two Pelosi Republicans are sickos. Yuck.

You are so, funny Steve. The question was for those of us who read this report: Who believes this man (TRUMP)?

Steve, you believe him (TRUMP), don't you?

I just can't believe that you are that slow, I see that you can't stay on point or the subject. The question that I asked you was not about THE RALLY. Either that or you just embarrass for TRUMP.

The people of Arizona know by the resistance of the Board of Supervisors that their election should not have been certified. They will pass new laws to correct the abuses of the Board of Supervisors. Problem solved.

What about the audit Steve? Would you believe this report after all of these unscheduled delays by 8 months from The 2020 Presidential Elections if the shoe was on the other foot?

That project is a money waste and The Arizona Senate needs that $6 million Steve. Make the call and tell Arizona you will give them the money for FREE, make that call now Steve!

Remember Ron, you can't proove a lie. Arizona doesn't need $6 million for new routers.

Steve Williams
Why? Because you already gave them the money Steve?

Wednesday, July 28th 2021 at 11:28AM
Dea. Ron Gray Sr.
Because 1) it's $3 million, not $6 million and 2) the routers are fine. There is no way they can be "tampered" with that would not be detected by the next pre-election certification. Katie Hobbs is full of doo-doo.

Arizona Audit, [27.07.21 19:05]
[Forwarded from Arizona Informer Channel]
Statement from Senate President Karen Fann (https://www.azsenaterepublicans.com/post/statement-from-senate-president-karen-fann-1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"During the forming of the audit process, Ken Bennett offered his services as a liaison between the Senate and the auditors. As a past Arizona Secretary of State, Senate President and a family friend for decades, I couldn’t imagine anyone better for this position. Knowing the auditors were from out of state and would need someone to coordinate with the Senate, Maricopa County Supervisors and Elections department, and assist with the logistics in conducting an audit that is the first of its kind in the nation, he is an asset to everyone in the state.

At the July 15th Senate hearing, Mr. Bennett was the expert testifier in describing the problems the audit has encountered since the first day, due to internal problems at the Maricopa County Elections department. Lack of chain of custody, ballot boxes mismarked, duplicate ballots with no corresponding numbers as required by law, and ballots haphazardly stuffed into boxes, to only name a few of the problems encountered. Maricopa County continues to withhold vital information from the public and the auditors which has created additional costs, months of delays and a lack of transparency on their part. Instead of working with the Senate, our constituents, and the auditors, Maricopa County has engaged in a social media campaign to try to control the narrative, instead of providing the whole truth, facts and items required to be produced by the legal subpoenas.

The physical counting of the ballots and machines will be fully complete this week and returned to Maricopa County. Since Maricopa County has been less than cooperative, a question came up a few weeks ago about what happens if the audit numbers don’t match with Maricopa County’s numbers? Our attorney suggested the Senate perform an independent counting of each ballot paper prior to the ballots being returned. This has been accomplished under the direction and authority of the Senate by Randy Pullen, who is a retired auditor with a nationally renowned auditing firm.

This past week members of the media have asked why Mr. Bennett is not engaged in this part of the Senate ballot verification procedure. As Mr. Bennett was quoted in the media, “I shared some box counts of how many ballots were in each box, and that got leaked to the press and I apologized to Senate President Fann. I had promised that information would not be leaked to the press, but it indirectly got done, so that’s how I got barred from the audit".

The auditors are doing the job they were hired to do, albeit more difficult than originally planned due to Maricopa County withholding vital documents and information, which appears to be purposely withholding the truth from the voters. When any audit is complete, the results are explained with supporting documentation of proof to the client. It is irresponsible to disclose partial information to the media since they are not “confirmed” facts until the audit is final. This only leads to confusion and misinformation with the public. For that reason, it is imperative anyone working with the audit is required to adhere to the rules of not disclosing unconfirmed information.

With the completion of the “hands on" work this week, the auditors will now be doing the analysis of all the data collected to submit the results. We sincerely hope Maricopa County will produce the missing documents and information we have requested for the audit to be complete and finalized. The voters deserve to know their votes are safe, secure and legally counted. To that end, Ken Bennett will be involved and a vital part of the draft and final reports to ensure their accuracy with his knowledge and contributions throughout the audit process."

The routers haven't been turned over, so the Arizona Senate can't possibly be on the hook for $6 million Ron. Turn over the routers and then we can talk price.

The means that Arizona is about to cut ties with the bogus recount of the votes. They are tired of being the laughingstock of the country.

They are under legal jeopardy. They can't cut ties.
