Oxford High School shooting: Guns are more important than the motive The debate surrounding the recent Michigan school shooting reveals the urgent need for a change in gun culture. By Zeeshan Aleem, MSNBC Opinion Columnist UPDATE (12/03/2021 03:10 p.m. E.T.): A Michigan prosecutor has charged the parents of suspect Ethan Crumbley with four counts of involuntary manslaughter based on the claim that they acted as irresponsible gun owners. It's a rare legal maneuver. A teenager allegedly opened fire in Oxford High School in Michigan on Tuesday, fatally shooting four students and injuring seven other people, including a teacher. It appears to have been the deadliest U.S. school shooting in years, and viral videos of terrified students desperately climbing out of windows to save themselves have raised yet another round of debate about what must be done to end this uniquely American affliction. As usual, a great deal of the media coverage of the shooting has focused on the possible motives of the suspect. Reporters have pointed out evidence indicating the 15-year-old suspect, Ethan Crumbley, apparently flaunted a semi-automatic handgun on social media days before the shooting; that he allegedly wrote in a journal about his intention to massacre students; that investigators said he had videos on his cellphone showing him talking about killing students; and that in the run-up to the shooting, two teachers had separately flagged his behavior as concerning. Prosecutors have emphasized indications that this was premeditated and have charged Crumbley with, among other things, terrorism. (He pleaded not guilty.) The details are always important, and reporters and investigators are doing their jobs. But when contemplating solutions to this recurring problem, a lot of the discussion over the suspect’s character and intentions may effectively be a diversion from another major culprit here: the gun itself. It's wrong to blame the parents. Only the son pulled the trigger and only he should be charged. The parents will be found not guilty.

Those Parents bought a 15-year-old minor hand pistol and you don’t think that was wrong to do? Why did those parents run from the law?

It was legal for the parents to buy their son a gun. Based on my experience, what happened was more likely the responsibility of the school than the parents.

In the state of Michigan you must be 18 or older to buy a hand weapon. That is the reason why that thug's parents is being brought up on charges as well in. And this boys parents was running from the law.

I know you believe in lynch mob justice Ron, with this entire family in solitary confinement. Is this a commercial prison operation that you love so much?

It was the parents who bought that gun for 15 year-old in a state where you have to be 21 to be he’ll responsible for the safety of a weapon. It is amazing to see that people like you feel they should not be Held responsible for your under age children. It’s amazing. Then knew that being the parents of that young murderous Thug was in trouble, why did you think they what is considered Fugitives from the law for a short while? It’s amazing why you want to try to protect these people in this case. Tell me something Steve, would you buy a weapon for your 15-year-old child?

I didn't need to buy a weapon for my sons Ron. I started them all shooting with one of my pistols at a very early age, like 6 or 8. All of them were thoroughly educated about gun safety from an even earlier age, before graduating to the level of actual shooting. In Pennsylvania the law was the same as in Michigan, a minor can possess a gun (as when shooting), if they are under supervision. Can a Minor Ever Legally Possess a Gun in Michigan? Michigan prohibits minors, those under 18, from possessing firearms in public, unless: A legal adult, someone who is at 18, is supervising them. https://okeefelaw.net/gun-crimes/juvenile-...

A $500,000 bond is extremely unfair. But you have already judged the parents guilty and deserving of indefinite solitary confinement, and you don't even know the law. Huh Ron?

Michigan prohibits minors, those under 18, from possessing firearms in public, unless: A legal adult, someone who is at 18, is supervising them. I See that did not happen in this case. A $500,000 bond is extremely unfair, it should be more to set an example for other wayward parents that don't listen to the cries of their children.

Setting an example? You're a poor example Ron. The parents are innocent until proven guilty. Since they are not guilty, since they have a right to a jury, there is no justification at all for an excessive bail like a half million dollars each. YOU are what's wrong with America.

I'll see it at the trial Ron. In the meantime, NOTHING that is known or suspected, justifies what is effectively, jail without bond.

Buying the gun for a 15 year old child it’s not breaking the law to you Steve? Killing Four other students inside of the school building with that same weapon days after the father bought that gun for that murderous thug and then running from the law is justifiable do you? Or is it all because in this case the perpetrators were white?

Buying the gun for the child was not breaking the law. The child was prohibited from possessing the gun without his parent's supervision. The child broke the law not the parents. There's no proof the parents were running from the law. They said they were afraid of a reprisal against them. I think it's all because the suspects are white, yes. You would never go after black parents like this. Look at all the fuss you're making over Daunte Wright, a simple case of resisting arrest, and still nothing about Darrell Brooks.

Steve, those people missed a court date, that means they were running from the LAW when they got busted Steve. Quick Question: "Did those two contact the court to tell the judge, they were NOT going to make it, and can we reschedule? Steve, answer that question, OK!

You can't fool me Ron. The prosecutor said she needed these parents to make an example of them. She and the judge are just conducting another political witch hunt. Just like every other Joe Blow she wants to be a star.

That's the point Ron, we don't have the details of what really happened. It will come out at the trial, AND YOU DON'T NEED TO SET BAIL AT $500,000 EACH TO ENSURE THE PARENTS SHOW UP.

When these parents are exonerated, in solitary confinement until that time, there won't be the hint of even an apology at that time. You will run, just like you have run from Jussie Smolett. But now it occurs to me, someone can start a crowd source fund to get the parents out. Someone should if it hasn't already been done.

YOUR WORDS: F you Ron. The arsonist that burned down the FOX Christmas tree was a repeat offender, was running around the next day, free without bail. F U C K that S h i t. MY REPLY: Just look at you Steve, Are you losing it? You are going to comparing an arsonist that burned down the FOX Christmas tree to a young murderer who walked through a public- Michigan school shooting and killing Children, have you lost your mind Steve? May they continue to rest in JAIL.

We're talking about bail Ron. How do you compare parents being held without bail for doing nothing wrong, with an arsonist that was caught red-handed.
