Conspiracy theorist Marjorie Taylor Greene showed her true colors, again, while trying to diminish the meaning of Kwanzaa. Taylor made her latest ignorant statement while responding to a tweet from the College Republicans group, which tweeted "wishing you a happy and prosperous Kwanza."

"Stop. It’s a fake religion created by a psychopath," the conservative said in response to the tweet. "You aren’t bringing in new voters, you are turning them away. People are tired of pandering and BS."

Greene also attempted to slander activist Maulana Karenga, who created the seven-day holiday in 1966. Karenga, who was convicted of felonious assault and false imprisonment in 1971, has insisted he was targeted because of his work in Black nationalist politics.
According to Newsweek, Karenga currently serves as chair of the Africana Studies Department at California State University, Long Beach.

Social media users tried to educate the Republican, first informing her that Kwanzaa is not a religion.

In 1971, Karenga was sentenced to one to ten years in prison on counts of felony assault and false imprisonment.[16] One of the victims gave testimony of how Karenga and other men tortured her and another woman. The woman described having been stripped naked and beaten with an electrical cord. Karenga's estranged wife, Brenda Lorraine Karenga, testified that she sat on the other woman's stomach while another man forced water into her mouth through a hose.

A May 14, 1971, article in the Los Angeles Times described the testimony of one of the women:

Deborah Jones, who once was given the Swahili title of an African queen, said she and Gail Davis were whipped with an electrical cord and beaten with a karate baton after being ordered to remove their clothes. She testified that a hot soldering iron was placed in Miss Davis' mouth and placed against Miss Davis' face and that one of her own big toes was tightened in a vise. Karenga, head of US, also put detergent and running hoses in their mouths, she said. They also were hit on the heads with toasters.[17]

Jones and Brenda Karenga testified that Karenga believed the women were conspiring to poison him, which Davis has attributed to a combination of ongoing police pressure and his own drug abuse.[4][18]

Karenga denied any involvement in the torture, and argued that the prosecution was political in nature.[4][19] He was imprisoned at the California Men's Colony, where he studied and wrote on feminism, Pan-Africanism, and other subjects. The US Organization fell into disarray during his absence and was disbanded in 1974. After he petitioned several black state officials to support his parole on fair sentencing grounds, it was granted in 1975.[20]

Karenga has declined to discuss the convictions with reporters and does not mention them in biographical materials.[18] During a 2007 appearance at Wabash College, he again denied the charges and described himself as a former political prisoner.[21]

Maulana are forms of address to a sovereign.

‘Mujam-Al-Mustalahaat-Ad-Deeniyah (a dictionary of religious terms) written by Dr. Abdullah

Ibn Ashy Al-Maliki and Dr. Abdul Lateef Sheikh Ibrahim, state ‘Maula’ means ‘a protector’, ‘a guardian’.

While narrating the sanad (chain of narrators) for different Ahadith, Imams Bukhari, Muslim
and all scholars of hadith, referred to certain narrators as the ‘Maula’ of others.

Sometimes Imam Bukhari would introduce Kuraib as the ‘Maula’ of Ibn Abbas.

He would introduce Nafi as ‘Maula’ of Ibn Umar and would say to Humran..‘Maula’ of Uthmaan (R.A).
...There are hundreds of such examples in the books of hadith.

Similar usage can also be found in all books of Fiqh and Usoolul Fiqh (Principles of Fiqh) where
the word ‘Maula’ is used for many of the above mentioned meanings.

AlQuraan has also used the word ‘Maula’ for different meanings. It has been used singly and has also
been used combined with other pronouns. Some of these verses are:

Suratultul Al-Hajj verse 78 states:

"And hold fast to Allaah. He is Maula kum – your Maula (Patron, Lord).
What an excellent Maula (Patron, Lord) and what an excellent helper."

....Suratul Anfal verse 40, Suratul Al Imran verse 150,
Suratul Tahreem verse 2...the word ‘Maula’ has been used to mean ‘lord’, ‘patron’ and refers
to Allaah since He is the real patron, the Lord and the real Governor of our affairs.

Along with this, the word Maula has been used for several other meanings in the Holy Quraan.
in Suratul Dukhan verse 41 states:

“The Day when no Maula..can ask another ‘Maula’ in anything and no help can they receive.”

In this verse, Maula does not refer to Allaah, Our Creator but it refers to human beings.

.. Suratul Hadeed verse 15 states:

“This Day no ransom shall be accepted from you, nor of those who rejected Allaah.
Your abode is the fire, that is your ‘Maula’ (place, destination) and an evil refuge it is.”

In two places of AlQuraan, the word ‘Maula’ attached to the pronoun ‘na’ has been used and they both refer to Allaah. In Suratulh Baqarah verse 286, it states:

“And blot out our sins..grant us forgiveness and have mercy on us. You are ‘Maula na”.

In the above verse, the word Maula has the meaning of master and protector and our true and real protector and master is only Allaah, hence the use of the word ‘Maulana’ for Allaah.

Secondly in SuratultulTawbah verse 51, it states

“Say nothing will happen to us except what Allaah has decreed for us. He is ‘Maula na’ (our protector)
and on Allaah let the believers put their trust”..Maula conveys the meaning ‘protector’ and when used
with the pronoun ‘na’, it means our protector.

It should be noted that the real issue is not with the word ‘Maulana’,

..it is with the usage of the word ‘Maula’, since the word ‘na’ is a pronoun which can be used for anyone.

In this manner, the words ‘Maula hum’ (their lord), Maula kum (your lord) and ‘Maula hu’ (his protector) have all been used in the Holy Quraan to refer to Allaah.

In some passages of the Holy Quraan and traditions, as well as the books of Fiqh, the word Maula has
been used to convey many different meanings of ‘Protector’ and ‘Master’ ..

In Suratultal Tahrim verse 4, it states

“But if you back up each other against him, truly Allaah is his Protector (Maula) and Jibraeel

and the righteous ones from among those who believe”.

And Allaah knows best.

In this verse it is clear that Allaah has used the word Maula for himself, Jibraeel (A.S) and the righteous servant...the verse means, truly Allaah is the (Maula) protector of the Prophet (S.A),
Jibraeel is also his Maula (protector) and the righteous believers are also his Maula (protector).

..other words became prevalent among the Muslims living in different cities of the Islaamic world.

Words such as Mullah, Allama, Sheikh, Mufti, Maulana, Maulvi etc. all the Islamic scholars have given

their blessing and an allowance for its usage.
