Charles Mingus was a jazz composer, bassist, pianist, and bandleader who was born in 1922 and died in 1979. He played with many jazz legends, such as Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis, and influenced many future jazz luminaries, such as Eric Dolphy and Jackie McLean. He created a musical and cultural legacy that integrated and transcended jazz trends of the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, drawing from various sources, such as gospel, blues, Latin music, modern classical music, and the jazz avant-garde. He was often compared to Duke Ellington as a master of harmony and timbre, and he developed a unique method of composing that involved dictating parts to his sidemen and allowing room for improvisation. He was also a fierce advocate for musicians' rights and creative efforts4. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz composers of the 20th century, and his centenary is celebrated with tribute concerts at Lincoln Center.
