On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued his historic executive order — the Emancipation Proclamation — freeing all slaves in the Confederate States. Full emancipation throughout the U.S. would only come after the Civil War ended in 1865, with the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution.
