There are many original pioneers of the “Southern Soul Atlanta Movement” who remain vigilant on where the movement is headed. Many music executives and leaders paved the way in Atlanta by consulting media, podcasts, hosting events at Magnolia Lounge, Vybz, Lithonia Amphitheater, and other venues. The original mission was to within five years to have southern soul music streaming on terrestrial radio stations worldwide.
Today, PR and promoters continue to explore the club scene, DJs, fake award shows, trail-rides, old school celebrities, and cruises, in an effort to gain audiences and support, but the results remain the same.
Although the genre continues to be categorized as a petty and cliquish environment “indicating a few artist, promoters, and producers are making a living, while there are small circles of individuals that can’t find a way to connect due to greed, and or entitlement.”
Many southern soul entertainers are reaching millions of audiences worldwide. In addition, the genre gains exposure via YouTube & Facebook “Live” streaming, local marketing, venues, and clubs. But, the music still cannot be heard on terrestrial radio today. When you turn on the radio today in 2024’ all you hear is music from the past on Grown Folks Radio outlets.
It is a disrespect to all those who paved the way, only to see the movement in the same state. With all the initiatives and music being produced daily, what is it going to take to update terrestrial radio - Grown Folks Radio playlists!
One thing for sure - and two for certain, everyone is onboard with false advertising, worthless promotions/flyers, fake awards, and exploiting the music genre to their own benefit, as well as the people who have and continue to work behind the scenes, and upcoming artists.
Today, there is little to no interest in elevating and advancing “Southern Soul Music” as a Genre, but everyone is capitalizing in one form or another!
