As a young child, I was a hard-core comic book fan. Superman and Batman. Spiderman and the Black Panther. I never came across an X-Men title that I didn't enjoy reading. But it was Marvel Comic's "What If?" series that interested me the most.
The "What If?" series featured a character named The Watcher. The Watcher, well, watched the antics of Earthlings from the Earth's moon. The writers and illustators at Marvel Comics used The Watcher to offer different endings to already presented stories. The stage for these story retellings was set by asking one simple question: "What if...?"
And that is the question I ask today. What if we human beings weren't supposed to be divided along racial/ethnic lines? What if we were designed solely for God the Father's glory, to be the recipients of his favor? That would be pretty amazing, wouldn't it?
Because of our limited knowledge about the universe, I think we human beings are doing ourselves a disservice when we discriminate along racial/ethnic lines. On Monday, July 14th, during a segment titled WE MUST NEVER FORGET: The Civil Rights Movement Then and Now, I even suggested that we human beings won't decide to come together as a family until we are faced with a threat outside of this planet. I say this because most, if not all, of us go through life thinking we are God's gift to creation. Not once does it dawn on us that there may be someone looking for us the same way we're looking for them. And if they're looking for us, what are we doing now to prepare ourselves for first contact.
If other beings from other planets had the technology to pay us a visit, I think our divisions would be obvious. I also think White Anglo-Saxon Protestant males and females would do everything they could to direct these visitors' attention to their own culture while ignoring the cultures of other ethnic groups. I say this because the National Aeronatics and Space Administration (NASA) and other science organizations have the audacity to ignore the lack of diversity within their ranks. Persons of color need to be active participants in the exploration of space, search for alien life.
I also think the space probes that have been sent out as peace offerings misrepresent who we are as a people. Pick up a copy of your newspaper. Flick through its pages. Tell me what you see. I'll tell you what you see: If you're a person of color, more specfically a black American, you don't see yourself. What you see is a system that omits every other race except the one in the driver's seat.
And this is what these alien beings will encounter after downloading the information contained in these probe's databases.
But I have a few more "what if" questions for you. What if we were indeed created in God the Father's image for his glory, to be recipients of his favor? And what if we were only given these physical bodies so that we could be prepped for new challenges in other parts of the universe. What if the spirits of deceased family members, friends and acquaintances are already meeting these challenges head on, engaged in a battle against princes and principalities, the rulers of the dark world. To me, that would be a higher purpose, one that truly makes meaningless the secular things in life.
I think George Lucas (Star Wars) and Gene Roddenberry (Star Trek) got it wrong when they convinced us that alien life will resemble creatures that look like Wookies and Vulcans. If there are other beings out there, I can almost guarantee they look like us. Why, you ask? Because we were created in God's image and placed on planet Earth by him.
Here's something else to consider: What is the only supernatural power that human beings have that every human being knows about? That would be the power of conception. We have been gifted by God the Father to create other beings in God the Father's image. This supernatural ability is at its best when one man (Adam) and one woman (Eve) love each other unconditionally, becoming one in mind, body and spirit. So, when we heteros*xual couples become intimate, we're not just making love to each other; we're also making love to God.
Something is going on out there, people. And we have to do more to reconstitute the human family during the short amount of time we spend on this Earth. If we don't, we're going to die divided, having missed a golden opportunity to discover if what we think is out there looks anything like us.
