I Went White Water Rafting this Past Weekend with 6 Friends, and We Had a Ball Shattering Some Stereotypes (1086 hits)

It was a great time. It got a little scary during the last 30-45 minutes because we got stuck on some rocks a few times. We handled it well though. We had to pray and press our way through some things.

All in all, it was an awesome experience. it's something I thought I'd never do...and I did it.

It was liberating.

i have always thought that all of us could use any type of adventure with nature. i work with a business group that believes in any kind of group activity that involves. we have a book on our book list, i think it's called "way of the wild heart". it mainly talks of how most males need this type of adventure during their teen years to release that adventurous spirit at this stage.

i may start slow and just do a weekend camping trip with a log cabin.

HI Dee, I'm glad you had fun. I enjoyed similar activities. I use to go horseback riding in Clinton MD and I use to go rocking climbign San Diego CA. I would love to jump out of a plane, but I can't find anyone to do it with me. If you're interested le tme know. :-) I try to do fun things, I'm very big on experiencing new things as well.

E Private, we went TO have fun, but happened to personally shatter at least one myth about black folks and lakewater. I originally had NO intention of going, but with a little motivation from the gentleman that organized the trip, I finally said okay. We're two of the ministry leaders at our church and he motivated me by encouraging me to lead by example in this way that was SO uncomfortable and dowright scary for me.

I can swim. I was swimming like a fish by the time I was in the 2nd grade, so that wasn't the issue for me. It was getting on a boat...let alone a RAFT on waters we KNEW weren't going to be calm.

There were some seriously scary moments in there, including when one of our members fell off the boat. Swimming or being drenched in anything but bathtub water or swimming pool water was one of my other problems. The very thought of amoebas and other junk crawling up my trunk were not appealing to me AT ALL.

I'm proud of myself and my people. Aside from one other guy, we were the black people there and trust me when I say that the white folks were "surprised" to see us. LOL. We had a blast and mingled with another culture. We learned something from them and they learned something about us. It was fantastic.

Etana, I hear ya. The next thing our organizer is talking about is parasailing, which I will NOT do. He mentioned skydiving, which I also think I will NOT do. We're likely going to go hiking (in the woods on an actual trail) next and then we'll probably take go waterboarding somewhere in the Puget Sound after that. We've also talked about rock climbing, which the tomboy in me is all too ready to try.

We're planning for a ski trip this Winter, too. So our itinerary plans to be full. The more WE go, the more we can compel others to break their comfort zone and go, too.

I'm going to have to bring up horseback riding, which I haven't done since I was 10. That'll sure be fun.

Thanks for that idea! ;-)
