IS IT REALLY A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE A BLACK PRESIDENT? (459 hits)

I was just wondering why people think it will be a great thing to have a black president? Does anyone ever think about the ramifications of having a black president? There is a movement to get rid of A.A(Affirmative Action) and Obama being president would be a great argument on why it is not needed for the opponents of A.A.. Having a black president will fuel a lot of the arguments that the right wing has towards equality and race relations. Have we actually come so far that social justice legislation is not needed? If no, how do you think having a black president will affect it?

I guess my main question is, IS THIS COUNTRY TRULY READY FOR A BLACK PRESIDENT?

I think that Barack Obama will be a great president. I think that the country might not be willing to accept it but they are ready for a good president, weather he is black, white, hispanic, male or female.

Affirmation Action is a quota system anyway, back in the day it was truly needed. But now we have so many options, many Black businesses have pop up all over the place. Let's put some pressure on them with regards to hiring Black folks.

If you are the best qualified person for the job you should not need Affirmation Action. All Affirmation Action is, is window dressing for government grant money for white businesses anyway. If white business meet something like 17.9 % of Black workers on a construction site, then they can get the contract worth millions. So I guess Affirmation Action is critical for certain jobs (mainly laborer type jobs). But for a job that requires more analytical, organization and public speaking skils, I wouldn't want it because of Affirmation Action. I want it, because I was the best candidate for the position. You can count me out for the "window dressing." (unless I'm hurting for a job) :) But I guess, that's why Affirmation Action is needed because many people are hurting for a job.

I think if AA goes away many black people will be shut out of jobs. Even if you see AA as a quota system, the quota may go down to zero! Good legislation is necessary until you actually have a change of the mindset that made if necessary in the beginning. I think many white people, if they are honest with themselves and are willing to look, would be surprised at their own racism. It's so ingrained and people are so unconscious about it that they can't see it. We will see if the country is ready for a black president, the proof is in the pudding. Unless Obama, or Rev. Wright, (just kidding) does something really crazy, Obama is the obvious choice. If over 70% of the American people think we need change, where do they expect to get it? Mc Cain, I think not!

Back to this AA stuff, I would rather a person be hired because they are black, than not hired at all. The qualification stuff is not enough. But, if indeed it is the case that they are hired because they are black, they are qualified! Let's get real, most people work for money so I say take the job. And let’s face it, we have all worked around white people who were no smarter than we are, many even less. Qualifications are often the way to justify a quota.

Yes,America is ready to add a Black man as President to it's History books, but what will the pages contain? Especially if we find that it makes no difference.
Issues that have been swept under the rug will be brought outand we must all face the real problems, or move on.

Barbara, well said. Because if I was umemployed, I would want a job and if A.A. policy got me the job, I would be please. We might have to face the facts, that although we were qualified for the job, A.A. could still be the reason behind the scenes.

Here is the thing about Affirmative Action, it may get you in the door, but it does not keep you there. Also it does not apply to just black folks anyway, any one that is not a white man is a minority and that is how it is defined, if it is taken away even white women may not be hired in the ole boys club.
