As I was online reading some of the articles from the news, I came across this article, "UCLA accused of illegal admissions practices". A professor has resigned from his position on The Committee on Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools. He has accused UCLA of tampering with the admission process for African Americans and fellow committee members are trying to cover it up. Of course UCLA states the report is unsubstantiated. However, the Professor had notice a significant rise in the University's enrollment of African American students as proof that officials were tampering with the admission process. Now that UCLA is underfire from the NAACP they are under pressure to admit more African American students.
According to California Proposition 209 (1996) bars Universities from considering race and other factors in the admission process. In the following years the number of black students declined with only 103 entering freshmen and 108 transfer students. Since the admission change in 2006, the number of black students increase for Fall 2007 to (ex:) 230 of 4889 freshmen enrolled. These suspicions raised awarness for this Professor that University officials may be violating the law in their efforts to boost the number of black students on campus. The Professor also stated that once the committee learned of a student's race through their personal essays, it became a factor in their decision for admission for black students.
Should it really be a proposition for African American students to enter into Universities?
What is the difference between this type of Proposition and Affirmative Action?
