ATTENTION UPPER CLASS BLACKS IN AMERICA! (199 hits)

To make this short WHERE ARE YOU! For the most part growing up I was not influenced by any black lawyers, teachers, authors, doctors or any other professionals growing up. Nor were any black people that I grew up with. Only the athletes and entertainers on television who were succesful and making money.
I know that if some of these young brothers saw more professional black people they would learn that they can do it too.
I recall Kahlil Gibran saying in his book "the prophet" something like
"If a rich man gives his money it is good... but if he gives his time it is great."
I have searched for anyone to give their time to the youth. Even a few words of wisdom can impact a persons life.
Please Upper Middle Class and Upper Class African Americans you may not see the condition of these niebhorhoods but I do and I think you all can make a differance.
Thank you for your time.
Peace and love for all.

Wesley,

I try my best to reach out to my people...and I know others on this site try to help as well. What are you suggesting?

I must agree with you. Who you are exposed to does influence your view of the world. I did grow up around Black doctors, lawyers and professionals. What I learned most is that they were ordinary people who refused to be relegated to the roles other people defined for them.
I think those Black professionals are still there and still willing to reach out but their seems to be fewer members of our youth willing to hear the message. We prescribe hard work, self sacrifice, perseverance, giving back and a thick skin. Certainly, this doesn't resonate with the 'bling' culture of immediate gratification that the entertainment industry represents.

Thats why I want to be a teacher. I want to reach these children while they are young. I want to show them real goals.
I was so happy when I found out that there were so many black doctors on this site. I wanted to learn from them.
When I become a teacher, I will voulenteer at a group home for a couple hours a week. Simply to show them that if I can make it anyone can!
I honestly dont think I have ever met a black doctor, a black person with a doctorate and I asked most of my friends and they do not remember any.
Now I have met two!
Thanks for the replys!
