I being only 19, and soon to be 20, it is very discouraging to see that other youth my age just don't have the passion in them about things like voting, black social issues, and school. With election day just around the corner it was very disheartning learning that there were many unregistered black teenagers on my campus. I asked them why they were not registered and I heard such potent answers like "Why should I vote?", "The government doesn't care about me, so why should I care about the government?", "Politics doesn't concern me.", and probably the most heard everywhere "My vote doesn't matter." WOW! I know right. Crazy to think that is some things that actually comes from our youth's mouths. I told all these people that they couldn't be more wrong and that they should get registered. This made me think about writing this blog asking where is the fire in todays youth? Knowing that in the 60's and beyond I have seen were so many of our people have fought, struggled, and died just to give me the chance to vote. In the 60's there were many sit-ins and freedom rides that were active and it seems like in only 40 something years the fire is gone. I am the President of the Black Affair Association on my campus at East Tennessee State University and I struggle to get youth to even come to meetings, because many of our youth today could care less about talking about black social issuses. My college is also seeing a huge retention rate in the african american population on campus. It seems like todays youth is more worried about where is the best place to party rather than the best place best to study. LOL, it is hard to believe a 19 year old is writing this hu? Well, to keep this from being one massive blog I guess I will wrap up. So, as I wrap up this blog ask yourself if you are in the youth category where is the fire in my heart to do better. And, for people older the youth ask your youth where is their fire and passion? I, myself ask myself this everytime I feel discouraged and it helps me to press a little harder each time. Well, Thanks for reading, I might continue this blog later on so look for more someday. lol.
