The remains of 427 African slaves were given a hollow resting place at the African Burial Ground Memorial in lower Manhattan. This cemetery for slaves and free blacks dating back to the 17th century was re-discovered in 1991 during a $300 million government building project. The discovery of these remains are a reminder of black contributions to building New York.
An excellent book about this historical site and the story behind the slaves and free blacks found in tightly weaved in the book, "Breaking Ground" by Joyce Hansen and Gary McGowan. The book is perfect for every member of the family to learn from.
