Thursday, Oct. 16 is the 150th anniversary of John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry, an event which although unsuccessful initially, succeeded in its goal of igniting the conflict that brought an end to slavery.
It is a reminder of the sacrifices and determination needed to advance human rights.
While in North Carolina this week, I'm seeing advertisements from the Republican National Committee, Sen. Elizabeth Dole and Presidential nominee John McCain seeking to blame the financial meltdown on African-Americans.
In fact, it was the failure to enforce fair lending standards which led to the sub-prime orgy.
North Carolina legislators passed precedent-setting legislation against predatory lending, so Tar Heels know better. McCain and Palin are coming to N.C. this weekend. Let them know scapegoating hardpressed minority mortgage holders is not an acceptable campaign ploy.
John Brown set a standard for statesmanship and courage that McCain can not hold a candle to.
