Obama vs. McCain -- 16 days to go. Powell endorses Obama. (668 hits)

(Truthout.org) Former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell endorsed Senator Barack Obama for president on Sunday morning as a candidate who was reaching out in a "more diverse and inclusive way across our society" and offering a "calm, patient, intellectual, steady approach" to the nation's problems.

The endorsement, on the NBC public affairs program "Meet the Press," was a major blow to Senator John McCain, who has been a good friend of Mr. Powell for decades. Mr. Powell, a Republican, has advised Mr. McCain in the past on foreign policy.

Mr. Powell told reporters after the taping of "Meet the Press" that he had been disturbed in recent weeks by the negative tone of Mr. McCain's campaign, particularly its focus on Mr. Obama's passing relationship with William Ayers, a 1960s radical and founder of the Weather Underground. The McCain campaign has sought to promote the idea that Mr. Obama is "palling around with terrorists," in the words of Mr. McCain's running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, because of Mr. Obama's weak links to Mr. Ayers.

"I thought that was over the top," Mr. Powell told reporters. "It was beyond just good political fighting back and forth."

Mr. McCain was asked about Mr. Powell's endorsement during an interview on Fox News Sunday.

"I have always admired and respected General Powell," Mr. McCain said. "We have a respectful disagreement."

Brother Roger I agree with you 100 percent. This news is very devastating to the Conservative party particularly to McCain's bid for the White House. If a long time member of the of the party and former Secretary of State is saying that he began to question McCain when he chose Sarah Palin for a VP running mate and gave specifics to why he felt she wasn't ready to step in as President (God forbid) if something were to happen to McCain, then I think it is a major TKO to the McCain Camp.

With Powell's endorsement of a Democrat, where does that leave the McCain Campaign? I'll tell you...in deep trouble. The Republicans didn't need this blow at this time with the elections in less than 3 weeks. How will they even begin to make it up for all the ground that they have lost at this point? Will they step up the attacks and send the Pit-Bull out again? I am interested to know how all this will playout in the media, because my guess is that it should make for an interesting show-down.

Thanks to all for your comments, but you will notice that the McCain campaign didn't miss a beat. Sneatr McCain replied that he has the endorsement of 200 generals, and 5 former secretaries of state, and shrugged of Powell's endosement. Then he launched an attack accusing Obama of leadinga leftist movemnt toward socialism.

We cannot underestimate the lengths to which conservatives will go to defeat the most visionary leader in our generation. Obama has responded in the only way that really counts -- $150 million raised in September, and 100,000 folks who came out to a rally in St. Louis on Saturday... (that WAS a Republican leaning toss up state).

We have always known that we must perform 2 to 3 times better to get ahead. We know that Barack bama is the real underdog in this campaign, despite what McCain is saying. Barack Obama is running against 400 years of history. We all ought to watch Fox News Network for a few hours each day as a reality check, to understand the forces against Obama.

Brother Roger I serious doubt that McCain has the backing of 20 generals let alone 200! There is just something about the McCain/Palin ticket that when they speak they stretch the truth a bit too far. LOL The truth is if McCain would be honest, he was hoping for the endorsement of Gen Powell especially since he is a black Republican who is well respected for his intellect and integrity. It is a major blow to McCain's Campaign and he knows it & so does the media!

Bro. Roger, speaking of the media...have you heard? Fox News has invited James T. Harris to speak about Powell's 'surprise' endorsement of Barack Obama? Click on the link below. It should make for some entertaining news since the Fox Gossip network is a known major Republican base and hates anything Democratic.

I found the following to buttress my point about McCain not being honest of the devastating effect of Gen. Powell's endorsement of Obama. It's from Mike Allen's POLITICO PLAYBOOK...

...THE POWELL QUAKE -- Drudge calls Gen. Colin Powell a 'WEAPON OF MASS DEFECTION.' The N.Y. Daily News gives the bottom third of its front page to, 'POW! BAM! Colin Powell backs Obama, slams own GOP – Barack raises $150M in a month.' General Powell's stunning endorsement on 'Meet the Press' is the two-column lead of the WashPost and L.A. Times ('Big bucks and a big name favor Obama') and one column in the N.Y. Times ('Donation Record as Colin Powell Endorses Obama'). It gets four columns and a mug shot on the front of The (London) Daily Telegraph.

Jen, you are correct in your assessment. This is the only way to defeat a strong foe -- overwhelming force and dominance.

Even the conservatives at Fox News are beginning to acknowledge the impact of the Obama camapign an the increasing futility of the erratic attempts of McCain to smear Obama. It won't work this time.

General Powell, became one of my new heros today on Meet The Press. He left no doubt that he knows exactly what he wasts in his life and in his environment.I am sure that what ever he does, he gives it all of his honor and pride and ability to complete what he started.

I know that the General is his own person, because he left the Bush administration on his personal prencipials as a moral gentleman.

He made the Black community proud.

Please take note. not longafter the general was on Face the Nation;the FOX network had this going across their screen in my home this message. "Isreal and Iran will talk IF Obama is president".Eventhough there were two of us looking at the tv we had to say out loud, did you see that?(smile)It was all true so maybe Israel and Iran endorced Obama-Miden on FOX today around 4:30 in the east today.

Have you seen this Roger? Now that would mean a step to peace? Must not doubt but keep the faith.

You are correct in saying that we need to watch FOX. As, all of cable news networks go into rerun each day, I make a point of watching all of them. but, then I am retired so I can do this. Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow are the best campaigners for Obama going on cable news networks. I even saw Bill O'Reilly going against Laura Ingrum in defense of Obama and she is the one O'Reilly have on with him to agree with him once a week. Much like many of them in Congress, they too are trying to save their jobs.

Sean Hannity is stuck in Rev. Wright much like McCain is with his prisoner of war story. they have no way out so they just keep digging their hole deeper and deeper. If it were possible I would be able to feel a little sorry for the conservative media, a little(smile)
