Q&A With Richard Kigel

Do you have Leadership Potential? Why or Why Not?
"I do not believe I can answer that for myself. If I say "Yes, I can be a leader", to me, that is the height of arrogance. Real leadership is doing the right thing, even if you have to walk that rocky road alone. And if people start following you, then you become a leader. I have deep suspicion of self-proclaimed "leaders". In my opinion, people may follow someone who is reasonable, moral and ethical. But I think it is more important for me to conduct myself honorably than to worry about who is following me. On the other hand, as a teacher, I am always encouraging my students to see themselves as leaders and to do the right thing every day. Sometimes, it takes courage to be the first one to step into the dark. I want my students to have that courage. Faith, this was really a great question!!! It made me think!"

Interviewed by Faith Sloan 01/31/10

What will you do to bring about the kind of change we can believe in?
"Great question. I work with young people. I am a career teacher so I have an opportunity to change their hearts and minds in positive ways. I take it as an awesome responsibility. I am also a writer--and the whole point of setting ideas down on paper for others to read is to serve and nourish them. To change people fro the inside. That is my heartfelt aim. "

Interviewed by J. A. Faulkerson 01/08/10

What qualities about me, makes you want to be my friend.
"OH, man! Well, I love your up front honesty and your keen sense of right and wrong. You are not afraid to stand up for what you believe in. But, as you pointed out in your response to me, it all comes from a loving heart. PLUS--I dig those SHOES!!! (Check out the photo on the left!)"

About   (request update)
When it comes to reading, writing and books, I bring the practical skills of an experienced literacy professional to my work. A veteran of thirty years teaching in Brooklyn public schools, trained at Columbia University’s Institute for Teaching Reading and Writing, I have been on the front lines in the literacy wars, inspiring students in reading and writing for a generation.

MY CHILDHOOD’S HOME: Growing Up With Young Lincoln ( SynergEbooks 2006) is a vivid authentic account of Lincoln’s most formative years in the actual words of those who knew him best. It is the only Lincoln book for adult readers to focus on his formative years, offering intimate details in authentic eyewitness testimony unmatched in all Lincoln literature.

Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer, Co-Chair of the U.S. Lincoln Bicentennial Commission wrote: “Richard Kigel has provided an irresistible and inspiring saga of Lincoln’s rise from obscurity to the threshold of greatness. In recalling this eternally enchanting and quintessentially American Story, the book reminds us of the enduring promise of opportunity in a democratic society.”

To read more reviews of MY CHILDHOOD’S HOME, please check my website: www.younglincoln.com.

ON THE WINGS OF THE WIND: The Untold Story of History’s First Flight (SynergEbooks 2010) blends fiction and history, science and fantasy in a whimsical, high-spirited adventure through the darkest corners of our American past. Blending fiction and history, science and fantasy, ON THE WINGS OF THE WIND is a whimsical, high-spirited adventure through the darkest corners of our American past, a celebration of ingenuity and perseverance, a triumph of the human spirit.

The opening chapter of my adult novel in progress was recently awarded Honorable Mention in the Mainstream/Literary Short Story category of the 76th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition.

My Interview Question
Where do you go to find comfort and strength in times of struggle and pain?
Current Whereabouts:
I will keep on writing because I have lots to say. I will keep on teaching because I love influencing the next generation. And I will never stop praying because that is where I receive my help, strength and comfort. And I will always give love because I have been blessed to receive so much.
Life & Professional Aspirations:
I would love for folks to read my books and to be kind enough to share their thoughts, comments , reactions and reflections. A book with no reader has no reason to exist. I want everyone to read my book—white, black, green, purple, pink, polka dot—everyone.

Most Memorable Moment:
In May 1970, at the height of the Vietnam War, we closed down the college in protest, joining hundreds of other colleges across the country. I remember bussing to DC that year to add my voice to the cause of world peace. It was so important back then. Now, looking back, I would say we have plenty of work still to do.

My BlackInAmerica.com Profile
Why Are You Concerned About Black America:
My thinking goes like this: Black History is not only for black folks. It is the history of our country-- American History. It is the story of the challenges we faced and our efforts to overcome them as a people. It is history for all of us and we are all better for knowing Black History. As you all know only too well, the “history” of Black History isn’t pretty. It has long been abused, misused, mislaid, misplaced, dismissed, disrespected, simplified, ignored, mischaracterized, misunderstood and falsified. Clearly, some of that has changed in the last forty years. Black History is experiencing a well-deserved renaissance. The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, opening in Washington, DC in 2015, already has a website going to involve the public in planning exhibits and educational programs on topics such as slavery, post-Civil War reconstruction, the Harlem Renaissance, and the civil rights movement. Black History is a marvelously rich treasure that shows us where the real American heroes are. We are learning more details and making new discoveries all the time. “So much of African American history is still buried in trunks, attics, basements and closets,” said Dr. Henry Louis Gates. “They keep finding Mayan cities and tombs of pharaohs. They’ve got to find more manuscripts from black people in the 19th century. I’m confident of it. It’s just the way it has to be.”

She talked about it being a shame that some must exibit this kind of behavior be they believe it is correct or not, just not to be seen as an out cast in their group.Yes so much has changed and so much has not therefore those like you and I and Siebra and others stilll have a lot of work to do. Regarding your comments re: White Hunters (Black Women Loving White Men) [When it gets hot, everybody sweats. ] That's a fact, but I will add everybody not only sweats but also smells, too~ha! I noticed that Sister Irma was the only woman who commented. I think that silence shows the general attitudes of people, don't you? Although there are many eligible suitors among non Black men, the attitude of many (not all Black women) is that of Brother Jamal's OPINION when it comes to dating non Black men.

I did read your blog about the unions. I am still kind of leery about them. I have never been in one. I was in the Army for 23+ yrs and now work for a private company. I have witness the unions in action here in Boston. Our firefighters have been against random drug testing. About two yrs ago two firefighters were killed in the line of duty. One of them had drugs in his system, the other one was drunk. The union had been protecting them for years, the mayor and city councilers did not back down. No testing....no new contract(w/ a hefty pay raise). Now imagine if the company I worked for I came in under influence what would happen. Now there is an issue with the same city emplyees not showing up for work and having someone else cover for them while they work another job. Some have not been on the job in months...yes I said months. The jury is still out on what's going to happen in this case. the same goes for our police. They had a racket whereas any type of construction going on , they had to be on paid detail at the site vs having just a regular person . Our govenor kicked this out. Don't get me wrong, I am for workers rights, safety in the workplace , fair wages, etc. If I am expected to pay into my retirement, so should they. Should collective bargaining still be in place, yes but boundaries need to be negotiated. I had thought about teaching but I don't have the patience. I just tutor a few days a week. I can handle that.

I remember I had both White and Black (and Indian and Africans and Polish and etc..) ask me this, but there was a young Polish American guy who asked me once in a round the way routine how I could afford to work two days a week (as if all Black women have to work 3 to 4 jobs); I told him that since then Pres. Bush had cut out welfare and started work-for-fare that if I worked any more than two days a week, I wouldn't be able to get as many food stamps. We both laughed. How's that for a sense of humor.
