My BlackInAmerica.com Profile
Why Are You Concerned About Black America:
When my grandmother came to this country from Guyana, South America she was a nurse. She was turned away from Harlem Hospital because she was Black. She had no choice but to become a maid. Martin Luther King changed everything for middle class Black Americas who complete a college degree but nothing seems to have changed for the underclass. I am a professional Black woman and as a Commercial Real Estate Broker selling shopping centers I feel that the sky is the limit. However, that is not the case for those living in Harlem USA. You have to give the British credit where credit is due. When my father was raised in Barbadoes, the children were given a uniform, a good education and taught to speak the Queen's English. Here in America, God help you if you are poor. The school system is a failure. More money needs to be poured into urban communities. It's the only way to turn things around. I am also distrubed that whites understand that there is such a thing as poor white people and upscale white people, however they lump all Black people into the same category. Poor and ignorant. If you make it, your an exception. I loved the part in BLACK IN AMERICA about exercising your options. I have decided to exercise mine and I am enjoying it immersely. Who cares what others think. Marry whoever will support you and will do the right thing. Every couple that stays together uplifts their family, children and race.

Angela, it feels tremendously good to see a woman on the top whit so many aspirations and goals for the future! I a proud to say that I am born and raised in Suriname, next door neighbor of Guyana. I spent most of my teenage years in Nickerie, know as the Guyana in Suriname, and I loved every step of it.... As for now, tomorrow I will be 3 years in the US. I can totally relate to the experience of your grandmother. Three years ago I came here with a pretty good education, 18 years of work experience and a lot of knowledge in different areas. No one was willing to give me a job that would help me provide for my family, I had to start as a home health aide. Women working in that area are often taken advantage of and they don't know that there are so many opportunities open to get educated. I am used to explore and search for other opportunities and I must say that I am proud to tell you that I graduated in June this year with my BSc in Management (on-line Business school) in less then 3 years. I am pursuing a masters degree right now, but am unemployed as we moved to a for the most white area of the country in OH. I am determined to reach my goals and I am unstoppable, thanks to God!!! I applaud you, Angela and I look forward to interact with you!!! Thanks for being you!!!

I grew up in Barbados with a similar experience to your father. Barbados education system was exceptional. In this country there is no equality in education no matter how much they would like to make us believe in that concept. All the best to you.
