Yes, I believe President-Elect Obama can make good on his promises. However, the thing to remember is that each and every American must participate fully for the good of the country. We must take the responsibility to elect local officials with like-minded goals and interests for starters.
We must monitor our local and state government to move towards the promises of Mr. Obama and there is no better starting point then to transform our own minds from the hurtful angers and frustrations under the soon-to-be former Administration of G.W. Bush!
Each of us have a role to play for the future and when we make that shift, we will begin to see Mr. Obama's made true. We cannot be naive about the hard work and sacrifice it will take, but the goal is within reach now! If we resist "change," then we cannot blame a "failed" attempt to unite the country and move it forward.
We must begin talking to our children about the issues Mr. Obama has "promised" in order to instill those positive ideals in them because they will become our FUTURE leaders. In reading the book, "Change We Can Believe In" (Foreword by Barack Obama), I realized how simplified his promises really are. I realized how being basic over-rides greed and the "Ole Boys' Club." When you live in a major watershed area, you know and understand the significance of "thinking green.!" It would be hypocritical to not support a new Administration because the promises seem overwhelming and impossible. If we each pick just one of those promises and give it our full support, YES, Mr. Obama's promises will become reality. My challenge to each of you is can each of you commit to just supporting one of those promises?
If we can commit to that on the local level, it will reach the national level! If we take our skills and education and experience to the national level, it will trickle down to the local level. You can't beat that to monitor and police a common goal under new leadership.
If America expects that we will see this "change" the day after Mr. Obama is sworn in, then we are being foolish. Just like an individual works hard in school and towards buying a home and then can graduate with self-accomplishment or enjoy the rewards of home-ownership, in time we will all see the benefits of those promises.
Mr. Obama has called our attention to many, many issues and NO President can enter office and do it all over night. It will take time, but the difference is now we can all participate to make America the country where dreams come true...for everybody!
There is a blessing in owning a copy of "Change We Can Believe In." That is the fact that the pocket-sized book is a handy reference tool for your family to decide what "promise" they will help make true through their individual and collective efforts as a family, community. The book is almost a dictionary/enclopedia or sorts in that it defines Mr. Obama's promises. You do not need the help of spin doctors who we know will tend to cast a negative/slanted spin against Mr. Obama along with all the other nay-sayers.
As a people, we are smarter than that. We know how to work in our communities and for those who do not, check in with your church leaders. If we allow those promises to become political soundbites, then they will. We want more than that, so let's get busy.
Can you choose one "promise" you believe in and work to make that promise good? It's not to help Mr. Obama, it is to help America.
