
Sutley, the deputy mayor for energy and environment in Los Angeles and the mayor's representative on the Board of Directors for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, is the first prominent member of the gay and lesbian community to earn a senior role in Obama's new administration.
She was an EPA official during the Clinton administration, including being a special assistant to the EPA administrator in Washington. She also previously served on the California State Water Resources Control Board and was an energy adviser to former Gov. Gray Davis.
The city’s deputy mayor for energy and environment, Sutley served on the California State Water Resources Control Board from 2003 to 2005. During her tenure, the five-member SWRCB, which is responsible for protecting water quality and resources throughout California, also developed statewide water protection plans, established water quality standards and implemented state and federal water quality laws.
Professional and community activities:
Sutley served as energy advisor to Gov. Gray Davis, managing state and federal regulatory, legislative, financial and press matters. From 1999-2003, she was deputy secretary for policy and intergovernmental relations within the California Environmental Protection Agency, where she advised on water and air pollution policy, lobbied federal agencies and Congress, and established budget and legislative priorities.
He was a horrible governor, she is a member of the Gay & Lesbian Initiative.
First prominent member of the gay and lesbian community to secure a spot in the Obama administration; member of Hillary Clinton's California Lesbian, Gay, Bis*xual and Transgender steering committee during the primaries.
Sutley received a Masters in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and an undergraduate degree from Cornell University.
