You Are Being Lied to About Pirates (893 hits)

Who imagined that in 2009, the world's governments would be declaring a new War on Pirates? As you read this, the British Royal Navy - backed by the ships of more than two dozen nations, from the US to China - is sailing into Somalian waters to take on men we still picture as parrot-on-the-shoulder pantomime villains. They will soon be fighting Somalian ships and even chasing the pirates onto land, into one of the most broken countries on earth. But behind the arrr-me-hearties oddness of this tale, there is an untold scandal. The people our governments are labeling as "one of the great menace of our times" have an extraordinary story to tell -- and some justice on their side.

Pirates have never been quite who we think they are. In the "golden age of piracy" - from 1650 to 1730 - the idea of the pirate as the senseless, savage thief that lingers today was created by the British government in a great propaganda-heave. Many ordinary people believed it was false: pirates were often rescued from the gallows by supportive crowds. Why? What did they see that we can't? In his book Villains of All nations, the historian Marcus Rediker pores through the evidence to find out. If you became a merchant or navy sailor then - plucked from the docks of London's East End, young and hungry - you ended up in a floating wooden Hell. You worked all hours on a cramped, half-starved ship, and if you slacked off for a second, the all-powerful captain would whip you with the Cat O' Nine Tails. If you slacked consistently, you could be thrown overboard. And at the end of months or years of this, you were often cheated of your wages.

Pirates were the first people to rebel against this world. They mutinied against their tyrannical captains - and created a different way of working on the seas. Once they had a ship, the pirates elected their captains, and made all their decisions collectively. They shared their bounty out in what Rediker calls "one of the most egalitarian plans for the disposition of resources to be found anywhere in the eighteenth century." They even took in escaped African slaves and lived with them as equals. The pirates showed "quite clearly - and subversively - that ships did not have to be run in the brutal and oppressive ways of the merchant service and the Royal navy." This is why they were popular, despite being unproductive thieves.

The words of one pirate from that lost age - a young British man called William Scott - should echo into this new age of piracy. Just before he was hanged in Charleston, South Carolina, he said: "What I did was to keep me from perishing. I was forced to go a-pirating to live." In 1991, the government of Somalia - in the Horn of Africa - collapsed. Its nine million people have been teetering on starvation ever since - and many of the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country's food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas.

Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN envoy to Somalia, tells me: "Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead, and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury - you name it." Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to "dispose" of cheaply. When I asked Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: "Nothing. There has been no clean-up, no compensation, and no prevention."

At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia's seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish-stocks by over-exploitation - and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300m worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other sea-life is being stolen every year by vast trawlers illegally sailing into Somalia's unprotected seas. The local fishermen have suddenly lost their livelihoods, and they are starving. Mohammed Hussein, a fisherman in the town of Marka 100km south of Mogadishu, told Reuters: "If nothing is done, there soon won't be much fish left in our coastal waters."

This is the context in which the men we are calling "pirates" have emerged. Everyone agrees they were ordinary Somalian fishermen who at first took speedboats to try to dissuade the dumpers and trawlers, or at least wage a 'tax' on them. They call themselves the Volunteer Coastguard of Somalia - and it's not hard to see why. In a surreal telephone interview, one of the pirate leaders, Sugule Ali, said their motive was "to stop illegal fishing and dumping in our waters... We don't consider ourselves sea bandits. We consider sea bandits [to be] those who illegally fish and dump in our seas and dump waste in our seas and carry weapons in our seas." William Scott would understand those words.

No, this doesn't make hostage-taking justifiable, and yes, some are clearly just gangsters - especially those who have held up World Food Programme supplies. But the "pirates" have the overwhelming support of the local population for a reason. The independent Somalian news-site Wardher News conducted the best research we have into what ordinary Somalis are thinking - and it found 70 percent "strongly supported the piracy as a form of national defense of the country's territorial waters." During the revolutionary war in America, George Washington and America's founding fathers paid pirates to protect America's territorial waters, because they had no navy or coastguard of their own. Most Americans supported them. Is this so different?

Did we expect starving Somalians to stand passively on their beaches, paddling in our nuclear waste, and watch us snatch their fish to eat in restaurants in London and Paris and Rome? We didn't act on those crimes - but when some of the fishermen responded by disrupting the transit-corridor for 20 percent of the world's oil supply, we begin to shriek about "evil." If we really want to deal with piracy, we need to stop its root cause - our crimes - before we send in the gun-boats to root out Somalia's criminals.

The story of the 2009 war on piracy was best summarised by another pirate, who lived and died in the fourth century BC. He was captured and brought to Alexander the Great, who demanded to know "what he meant by keeping possession of the sea." The pirate smiled, and responded: "What you mean by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, while you, who do it with a great fleet, are called emperor." Once again, our great imperial fleets sail in today - but who is the robber?

POSTSCRIPT: Some commenters seem bemused by the fact that both toxic dumping and the theft of fish are happening in the same place - wouldn't this make the fish contaminated? In fact, Somalia's coastline is vast, stretching to 3300km. Imagine how easy it would be - without any coastguard or army - to steal fish from Florida and dump nuclear waste on California, and you get the idea. These events are happening in different places - but with the same horrible effect: death for the locals, and stirred-up piracy. There's no contradiction.

Great information. The Italians made a deal in the late 1980s with a land owner to dump nuclear waste in Somalia. This action started the starvation, land destruction, and failed state "idea".
This is a strong blog.

Clark you are very knowledgeable and I always enjoy your posts. The reality of this episode is if a european colonial power dumps nuclear waste on any soil, THAT IS BREAKING INTERNATIONAL LAW.......
If the LAW doesnt do anything then some human beings take action.
The "pirates"---or can we say Somali people---have even said that since the europeans dump wastes and steal from their INTERNATIONAL fishing areas against INTERNATIONAL Law they will take action themselves.
Now, I know europeans real well and I say that they dont care what an arab, an african, or asian, or muslim, or hindu has to say about Law:
Some Lawman on the french-usa warship will blow up a pirated ship or 10 with thousands of gallons of oil and fuel and cause an ecological disaster in the Indian Ocean, because they wont pay $2,000,000.00 to a noneuropean people and they will never negotiate with a noneuropean people.

This is what BIA is all about. A place where we can have a public voice that is not being censored to make us continue to believe that we are the VIOLENT BLACK MAN. In other words not being able to continue get the Black community to divide and distroy its own self with/ by miseducation.

I had forgotten his name the pirate who played a major role in America now being America not a property of England.

Yesterday I heard this remark on msnbc, "IT IS NOW TIME TO CALL THESE PIRATES T-E-O-R-R-O-R-I-S-T"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"I" suggest that if we want to help save farther distruction of any places in Africa is to renew our ties with the Mother Land. And, the best way to do this is by way of information to and by us just like in this blog....

getting rid of this misinformation is one of the best and greatest and effective weapon we have or will ever have my sisters and brothers...lets get busy....

Now lets try for some every day common sence:

No business is in business to LOOSE money...am I correct?

And, if this is true then although guns, ect. can not be used by these ships to protect their ships...which saves the most money?

1. Paying out countless $ millions ?

2. Hiring experts in martial arts to protect the shipments going into pirate waters?

Most of all, yesterday they were asking if these pirates should be called terrorist...FOX as I write this are discusing how our president should go into this African country and bring out those terrorist who are determaine to creat a naiton of ISLAM...with this it is suppose to get the Black community to turn against Africa...will that fears of the word ISLAM work this time on the Black community as well as it always has???????????

This is my point as they are being called (pirates) 'terrorist' AT THIS POINT IN TIME and everyone seems to be ignoring the greatest threat of them all "THE MUSLIM FAITH".

Iraq is Muslim, we backed this Muslim for 8 years against the Muslim shiites. Oh and this is only the U.S turning against Iran, because the Iranians rose up in full force against the American backed Prince of Iran who those people could no longer take any more of his torture of this country of Muslims in a Muslim nation.

There were no "terrorist" in Iraq!!!!!The peoples of Afganistan had won against the Russians! So I ask did anyone hear our president saying that "we are not at war with Islam? and have any one of you heard that these pirates were called terrorist or a whole nation should go to war with them, but the US.???!!

Did you hear China call for war and China does not have Black peoples at the rate of America where they would face a back lash from Africans or Africn-Americans.

WAKE UP MY PEOPLE THIS IS ABOUT OUR BLACK PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!!HELL BEFORE OBAMA STARTED TALKING ABOUT AFRICA WHAT MEDIA IN AMERICA WAS TALKING ABOUT AFRICA? Please give me a break!!!!!!!

Mozell, have you ever heard our government call the KKK 'terrorist"?

Have you ever even heard about the American who shot rockets into and bombed the IRS buildings (a "terrorist" )in the USA for three years...no, this happened in America in the last 10 years???

If you say "yes" to either of these questions then this is not related to religious bias and I will apologize to you.

We can also force our government to find out how much money those like the Clintons and the McCains got in profits for those killings in Africa or are we to just look at ONE part of Africa (of the media frenzys?)that those like the Clintons and the right wing republicans want us to look at?Like the slavery in South Africa-the justification for arpheid in South Africa came from the Holy Bible.Did we call trying to end this suffering and lose of lives there related to religion? would we have if it was Muslim centered and not Christain centered????

but then we do not teach this in our public schools and we sure will not find it on cable tv, again religious based unless one now don't call the Jews followers of their faiths????

If we do end up calling the Muslims in Africa Terrorist then we should call them terrorist of honor. They said that no harm would come to the village of the family of Obama's and it was true. This means that America must not step foot into Pakastian trying to get Bin Laden...why...these are a people of honor also and no less that the CIA gave warning to our government about how it is a custom of this country's culture to protect with their lives anyone they have welcomed into their country!!!! This I say on C-span in a town hall with FBI and CIA agents.

Our president is no fool if forced to do so, I would put bush and Chaney on trial right now to cause some kind of distraction for those right winged racist with political powers(ni the name of God-yes like the KKK)who are saying bad things about the little improvements inour economy gained with this president and more respect of America by nation after nation.

And, about Vietnam, would you call making a country unable to raise their major main stay crop-rice a form of winng a war that is if Vietnam was ever called a war by the us government in the first place. Oh, and speak to those families who were there when Amdrican was spraying Vietnam and how it is still showing up in their derormed children!!!!!!!!

As Clark says, learn from more than one source...

thank you very much robert as I never knew about that dumping. Our government is contaminating the waters of Mexico and every thing we breath in our air coming from China, but unlike in Africa the US pay thier economy enough money to keep the government to keep their citizens INCHECK if an when they try to complain.

If not for this pirate issye, I would have never known about the dumping...I am so glad that our discussing this maybe government/country's violationof top governmation we do not have to be worried about being classified as aid ing and giving comfort to the "enemy" as we might have been under the Bush administratioin(smile)

and again thank your robert for this education in this BIA community site

QUESTION...if this were the Bush administration would the expert shooters have kept the pirates alive to gain information, by any means necessary?

QUESTION...why would an expert shooter shoot to kill when information on these pirates is so very, very vital...OR IS IT?????????????????

VERY INTERESTING...at this moment I am listening to Geraldos program on FOX doing an interview with a company that paid ransom for their ship during last Thanksgiving holidays and guess what??? The subject of how much does the shiping company's insurence go up after the pirates took their ship?Loosing money...

I chant (pray)that this is another sign that this pirate matter will continue on far beyond another mass media feeding frenzy. I see the magic word here is "KENYA" What a beautiful and pwderful signal that this name will not be able to be hidden as AFRICA had been so far while the rich made big bucks of fthe sufferings in AFRICA for countless years.Even if those profits were put in Swiss banks they will now be coming into the light of day...Obama is a what, an African root word?(smile)?Maybe the map map makers will now put Egypt back into Africa where she belongs(LOL)
