THE FIST SHAKES MAKES A CONTROVERSY WELCOME
During the greeting ceremony on yesterday, September 22, 2009. Pro-tem Mayor Lowery offered a fist bump instead of a handshake. Many Memphians who watched felt that this was an embrassing way to greet an honorary visit of The Dalai Lama. However, The Dalai Lama seemed cheerful in receiving the greeting and smiled in a playful manner. The reason for the fist bump was suppose to decrease the spread of the H1N1 virus. Later, however the two mayors were pictured holding hand- in- hand in a tight three-some grip. Pro-Tem Mayor Lowery didn't seem to mean any intentional insult to the leader.
