WASHINGTON (CNN)– Reverend Al Sharpton and his lawyers say they are preparing to file a defamation lawsuit against conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh for an op-ed published Saturday, which Sharpton alleges "erroneously" characterizes his (Sharpton's) role in a string of violent incidents in New York in the early 90's. In the op-ed published in Saturday's Wall Street Journal Limbaugh writes Sharpton "played a leading role in the 1991 Crown Heights riot (he called neighborhood Jews ‘diamond merchants’) and 1995 Freddie's Fashion Mart riot." The Crown Heights riot began after a Hasidic Rabbi accidently struck and killed an African American boy with his car. The boy died from the injuries–sparking four nights of riots. The Rabbi was not charged, but Sharpton played a large role in rallying on behalf of the young boy’s family and the African American community. According to a statement put out by Sharpton’s media consultant, a study New York Governor Mario Cuomo commissioned showed Sharpton was not involved in the Crown Heights incident until after the rioting concluded. "Mr. Limbaugh's blatant and defamatory statements regarding the Crown Heights Riots falsely give the impression that Rev. Sharpton was present during the violence that occurred when in reality he had been called in by the family after the violence," Sharpton’s statement says. "In terms of Freddie's Fashion Mart, Rev. Al Sharpton, along with local elected officials supported the protests. However, a lone gunman who disagreed with the nonviolent nature of the protests entered the store and killed seven people and himself… For Mr. Limbaugh to imply that Rev. Sharpton has anything to do with someone that killed people and himself is blatantly wrong," the statement continues. Limbaugh’s attempt to invest in the National Football League’s St. Louis Rams franchise was overshadowed by a controversy over his “racial views,” which Limbaugh says were false. In the op-ed, he also lashes out at several media outlets, including CNN and “the sports writer community,” for what he calls "contempt in the news business." “ ‘Racism’ is too often their sledgehammer," Limbaugh writes. “And it is being used to try to keep citizens who don't share the left's agenda from participating in the full array of opportunities this nation otherwise affords each of us… It was employed against patriotic citizens who attended town-hall meetings and tea-party protests. These intimidation tactics are working and spreading, and they are a cancer on our society." Sharpton said unless Limbaugh apologizes or clarifies his remarks, the Reverend’s attorneys will move forward with a lawsuit. "Limbaugh has the right to criticize Rev. Sharpton, but he does not have the right to accuse him of criminal activity, and riots and murders are criminal," the statement concludes. Efforts to reach Limbaugh’s office were unsuccessful. The Wall Street Journal declined to comment. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/...

By RUSH LIMBAUGH David Checketts, an investor and owner of sports teams, approached me in late May about investing in the St. Louis Rams football franchise. As a football fan, I was intrigued. I invited him to my home where we discussed it further. Even after informing him that some people might try to make an issue of my participation, Mr. Checketts said he didn't much care. I accepted his offer. It didn't take long before my name was selectively leaked to the media as part of the Checketts investment group. Shortly thereafter, the media elicited comments from the likes of Al Sharpton. In 1998 Mr. Sharpton was found guilty of defamation and ordered to pay $65,000 for falsely accusing a New York prosecutor of rape in the 1987 Tawana Brawley case. He also played a leading role in the 1991 Crown Heights riot (he called neighborhood Jews "diamond merchants") and 1995 Freddie's Fashion Mart riot. Not to be outdone, Jesse Jackson, whose history includes anti-Semitic speech (in 1984 he referred to Jews as "Hymies" and to New York City as "Hymietown" in a Washington Post interview) chimed in. He found me unfit to be associated with the NFL. I was too divisive and worse. I was accused of once supporting slavery and having praised Martin Luther King Jr.'s murderer, James Earl Ray. Next came writers in the sports world, like the Washington Post's Michael Wilbon. He wrote this gem earlier this week: "I'm not going to try and give specific examples of things Limbaugh has said over the years because I screwed up already doing that, repeating a quote attributed to Limbaugh (about slavery) which he has told me he simply did not say and does not reflect his feelings. I take him at his word. . . . " Mr. Wilbon wasn't alone. Numerous sportswriters, CNN, MSNBC, among others, falsely attributed to me statements I had never made. Their sources, as best I can tell, were Wikipedia and each other. But the Wikipedia post was based on a fabrication printed in a book that also lacked any citation to an actual source. I never said I supported slavery and I never praised James Earl Ray. How sick would that be? Just as sick as those who would use such outrageous slanders against me or anyone else who never even thought such things. Mr. Wilbon refuses to take responsibility for his poison pen, writing instead that he will take my word that I did not make these statements; others, like Rick Sanchez of CNN, essentially used the same sleight-of-hand. The sports media elicited comments from a handful of players, none of whom I can recall ever meeting. Among other things, at least one said he would never play for a team I was involved in given my racial views. My racial views? You mean, my belief in a colorblind society where every individual is treated as a precious human being without regard to his race? Where football players should earn as much as they can and keep as much as they can, regardless of race? Those controversial racial views? The NFL players union boss, DeMaurice Smith, jumped in. A Washington criminal defense lawyer, Democratic Party supporter and Barack Obama donor, he sent a much publicized email to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell saying that it was important for the league to reject discrimination and hatred. When Mr. Goodell was asked about me, he suggested that my 2003 comment criticizing the media's coverage of Donovan McNabb—in which I said the media was cheerleading Mr. McNabb because they wanted a successful black quarterback—fell short of the NFL's "high standard." High standard? Half a decade later, the media would behave the same way about the presidential candidacy of Mr. Obama. Having brought me into his group, Mr. Checketts now wanted a way out. He asked me to resign. I told him no way. I had done nothing wrong. I had not uttered the words these people were putting in my mouth. And I would not bow to their libels and pressure. He would have to drop me from the group. A few days later, he did. As I explained on my radio show, this spectacle is bigger than I am on several levels. There is a contempt in the news business, including the sportswriter community, for conservatives that reflects the blind hatred espoused by Messrs. Sharpton and Jackson. "Racism" is too often their sledgehammer. And it is being used to try to keep citizens who don't share the left's agenda from participating in the full array of opportunities this nation otherwise affords each of us. It was on display many years ago in an effort to smear Clarence Thomas with racist stereotypes and keep him off the Supreme Court. More recently, it was employed against patriotic citizens who attended town-hall meetings and tea-party protests. These intimidation tactics are working and spreading, and they are a cancer on our society. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405...

/* You know, the television show "All In The Family" is an excellent rendition of how the average un-intelligent white American family views us (many of which are oblivious - innocent ingnorance that choose to espouse the beliefs and following of the majority - to thier demise) as a whole...un-intelligent! Hats' off to Carol O'Conner and the Cast. A very good show as is the others of societal suggestive sit-coms (Norman Lear) that depict a somewhat rational explanation of what mainstream White and Black America sees/views...not to mention the expertise of Brother John Amos (I Love That Guy) and many others of his ilk! Of course many are just suggestions...We Know How It All Really Plays Out In Reality, yes? Bring ON The Suit...I am an avid dis-liker of the limbaugh (notice the lower case usage) character (Beelzebub - Satanis - Lucifer...Devil), they have always found excuses that defy truth! They simply explain the **** away! I say to HELL with them and the constant belief that we will continue to except the crap they think we are willing to except and forgive them! NOT SO! I could say a hell of a lot more against him/them for their indifference ,distain, fear, and hatred (of US)...to what they call the lesser people. FRY HIS ASS, AL! Sue the sucker, his believers, his followers, his listeners, and all those who find nothing wrong with the statements and beliefs of beings like him...palin, and the like, for anything and everthing!!! Justice Will Prevail...sooner or later. I hope sooner than later. I will hold a celebration when they all are judged and not allowed to enter purgatory...JUST GO STRAIGHT TO HELL! Excellent Report Brother Steve! SANKOFA! I can not wait for this law suit to begin. It is now I wonder who will get the major coverage on the Republican conservative side to back up Limbaugh in tis law suit. I am wondering as it now seem that the Republicans have now split on who represents the CONSERVATIVES???? Is it the Republicans already in office or the right-wing or the tea party that is now out to right-wing the right-wingers taht are not extreme enough fot the Palins and the Limbaughs and the Becks. Me, I just call those in the Tea Party as the pre 60smovement or the 2010-2012 movement led by Palin(the closet KKK).(smile) Or, maybe a 21 century version of cutting off you nose to spite your face, huh brother Steve?LOL? thanks millions for the post and please do follow up...YES WE CAN...YES WE MUST...for the good of our country.......................

I never missed any of this program Gregory...it was good racism , the kind I grew up with...we could interchange with the "enemy" in equal ignorance of each others culture as we had no knowledge of them...but, this fight between the 'enemy' both Black and White was not our of disrespect, hate, trying to be little each other, etc. "i" speak now as I do many times on the site from personal experience, but, for those who have only known the pro or con sby way of second hand and usually from movies or TV find it hard to believe and may end up calling me from being a racist to being an Oreo(smile)but I am use to this...I am also guilty of doing the same exact thing about the Indians who I now call Native-American. Hell how can I not be completely ashamed that I grew up calling them savages, but then at the time our being called this was not taught in school!!!And what young person believe that their parents know anything(smile)And, this is why I am only trying to get the young to not make the same mistakes as we did .My generation learned from our generation before us who believed this about the Native-Americans and ths puts those who will replace me(us) farther ahead than our generation..this is what we learned and this is what is my duty to do the same thing.because I know with age this will turn into wisdom... The young have little idea of life is a process where we live actually not even for our children as much as our grand children, but one does not get to be a grand parent for many many years.. Thanks Steve , so many of your posts always seem to be where our culture can be passed now it always has been done...by word of mouth...some get and some don't...and my brother by now you do know that it is not only about skin color as so many have tried so hard to put into your head just as well as mine... and speaking from a personal point of view, you know more and understand more, than many of those with my skin color, do about us...(smile and hugs my brother in spirit) Now back to "civilization"...I heard on MSNBC that the Republican White lady who had to withdraw from that race in N.Y. in the last election has filed a law suit against the NY Post news paper that is owned by the same owner of FOX cable news network for the articles tha t were false and allowed Palin to come after her better in knocking her out of the race... Now I don't know if Sharpton's standing up against this kind of big power has started a new thing or if this is only the begining of the Republican conservatives and the Republican PURE conservatives or not that is behind this new law suit against the right-wingers...
