DEAR GARDENERS: WINTER PLANTING WITH WINDOW GARDENS (268 hits)

Dear Gardeners:
It's been such a long time since I've written you. The cold snap of snows and winter weather has kept us apart for some time as to writing about our love of earth and growing things.

Earlier today, I attended a program locally here that gave great tips on how to grow a window vegetable or flower garden right inside your home. I met with local gardener Stephane Wang Mompher who recently was featured in a Memphis Garden Magazine. Stephanie gave precious tips on how to start a window vegetable garden right from home. The project tools are quite basic.
You'll need these articles:
A window box --1 or 2
A couple bags of potting soil
Seeds--Minature Kale, Snap Pea and Tom Thumb Lettuce
Marker- You can substitute with a plastic knife
Writing marker--To write what's been planted

Take a visit to your local flower and garden center and pick up seeds. Some suggestions Stephanie gave are Miniature Kale, Sugar Snap Pea and Tom Thumb Lettuce. If you're in-experienced in growing things then you'll start by filling your window box(es) with soil. Stepanie suggested that in planting the Snap Pea you only plant about an inch deep. Taking you pinky finger and poking a hole in the soil drop in on single pea. To mark where you planted your peas, she suggested writing on a plastic knife where the pea was planted and so forth with the other sees. For the Minature Kale she said plant the very loosely on top of the soil and covering the seed gently. Lastly with the Tom Thumb Lettuce plant the seeds in shallow soil spreading four to five seedings. Spring softly the soil with watering two or three times and sit in your sunny window. Result of the seedlings will yield in approximately 3 to 4 weeks. Stephanie also mentioned that you can also plant minature carrots too! Watering at least once a week, and keep the window box in a fairly cool dry place with at least two or three hours of sunshine.

I found her program most rewarding. I wanted to attend it just so that I can of course, share it with all your growing hands. I'm looking forward to the Spring and Summer things that give us much satisfaction of seeing the wonders of gardens that grow. We have our work ahead, but when we step back, take a deep breath! ..How so beautiful to watch and see the marvels God gives us with the gift of growing things. Until then, Dear Gardeners.

How does your garden grow?

Love and Harmony,
MIISRAEL

Thank you Irma. I think using dirt is just as fine or perhaps better in some areas than buying and or using potting soil. If you have good dirt full of color with less sand, it's good. Fertilizers helps poor dirt...or cow manure. It smells a bit but plants love it. Glad I could help. I've missed hearing from the growing things people! Love your tips which I discover and learn are always very helpful.

As always sister MIISRAEL, you are right on time. It is actually spring where I am in northern Ca. One more reason why it is so true that the farmer is at the mercy of Mother Nature. Here where I live they grow lots and lots of fruits and nuts, and it seems that here in Feb. almost all of our trees and bulbs are trying to bloom.

I am going to use your box idea to plant in two of my giant planters to solve this on and off planting that has been going around in my mind these past few days...

Two days ago i recieved in the mail part of my plant order from Henry Fields. This was some what of a surprise because this is the first time i have order my thing from anyone but Gurney's seed co. Gurney only sends the orders for planting in your zone time. .. Any, way i ordered from for their $25.00 off cupon and because they had the CROWDER PEAS that I have been looking for since I have not been able to find any in the market for the past few years. I could only find them frozen even then and my husband loves them. MIISRAEL although I grew up with these peas being grown and eaten in my family, I would never eat them. My husband loves them and as i cooked them for him I began to eat them and I just love them now.

NOw here it is and I have these peas that are cold weather plants...the mercy of MN is, is their going to be any heavy frost still in my future...thus my delama until this blog of yours. I will put them in as house plants, but leave them out unless expecting frost...

PROBLEM SOLVED. thanks (smile)

ps
I hate potting soil and never use it because it drys out too fast. I buy actual dirt , soil for my house plants.

corrections..I was talking about the part of Ca. that I live when I was talking about growing fruits and nut trees and not I where the "I" is on this...

also MIISRAEL, because we have not had enough rain in the past few years for the first time during the fall those gofers moved in on that back of our property where I grow my vegs (with a lot of anti- pest helpfull and beatufil flowers grown there also) for the first time in the 30 + years we have lived here...but this year we have had enough rain that this part is now under water so I don't expect to have to fight the undergrown pest like this, this coming growing season as i had feared.(smile)
