Dear Gardeners:
It's been such a long time since I've written you. The cold snap of snows and winter weather has kept us apart for some time as to writing about our love of earth and growing things.
Earlier today, I attended a program locally here that gave great tips on how to grow a window vegetable or flower garden right inside your home. I met with local gardener Stephane Wang Mompher who recently was featured in a Memphis Garden Magazine. Stephanie gave precious tips on how to start a window vegetable garden right from home. The project tools are quite basic.
You'll need these articles:
A window box --1 or 2
A couple bags of potting soil
Seeds--Minature Kale, Snap Pea and Tom Thumb Lettuce
Marker- You can substitute with a plastic knife
Writing marker--To write what's been planted
Take a visit to your local flower and garden center and pick up seeds. Some suggestions Stephanie gave are Miniature Kale, Sugar Snap Pea and Tom Thumb Lettuce. If you're in-experienced in growing things then you'll start by filling your window box(es) with soil. Stepanie suggested that in planting the Snap Pea you only plant about an inch deep. Taking you pinky finger and poking a hole in the soil drop in on single pea. To mark where you planted your peas, she suggested writing on a plastic knife where the pea was planted and so forth with the other sees. For the Minature Kale she said plant the very loosely on top of the soil and covering the seed gently. Lastly with the Tom Thumb Lettuce plant the seeds in shallow soil spreading four to five seedings. Spring softly the soil with watering two or three times and sit in your sunny window. Result of the seedlings will yield in approximately 3 to 4 weeks. Stephanie also mentioned that you can also plant minature carrots too! Watering at least once a week, and keep the window box in a fairly cool dry place with at least two or three hours of sunshine.
I found her program most rewarding. I wanted to attend it just so that I can of course, share it with all your growing hands. I'm looking forward to the Spring and Summer things that give us much satisfaction of seeing the wonders of gardens that grow. We have our work ahead, but when we step back, take a deep breath! ..How so beautiful to watch and see the marvels God gives us with the gift of growing things. Until then, Dear Gardeners.
How does your garden grow?
Love and Harmony,
