The Queen's Chair: Tiger Woods' Apology (491 hits)

I don't know how many of you watched. I didn't and frankly, I don't care. I had better things to do during the winterbreak today. I didn't want to hear about this story when it first came out and I haven't changed my mind. Tiger Woods messed up and he needs to live with the consequences of his actions.

I caught part of it on the news shows because it was inescabable.

He did what he had to do to save his career.

But, he made himself vulnerable. He admitted to his feeling of entitlement. He said he felt that he worked hard so he had some right to his pleasures.

That is how lots of people feel--until they get caught.

He'll resume his career again. He will keep some of his fans--others will leave him. I think, the only person who really matters in this deal is his wife and smal children. What will they do?

We'll see.

Hi Clark:

This is where I disagree with you.

Public figures, especially athletes and entertainers, owe their professional success and financial rewards, their fame and their marketability to their fans.

Tiger Woods is not a golpher who tees up with nobody watching. His fans have made him rich.

It is certainly true that he is enourmously talented and amazingly disciplined and focused and he has worked hard for what he earned--nothing was handed to him. Still, his fans made him the media giant that he is.

Other disgraced athletes are in ta similar situation. Tiger has been most recently compared with Mark Magwire who has thoroughly disgraced himelf before his fans as a cheater. Now, years later, he is looking for some redemption because he wants a job in baseball and he would like some consideration for the Hall of Fame.

The bottom line is that all these disgraced public figures from Michael Vick to Plaxico Burris, to Eliot Spitzer to Mark Sanford owe their fans at least the respect and acknoweldgement that they let them all down.

In my opinion, Tiger made a sincere effort to do that. But if he wants to recover anything near his past lucrative economic success in the future, he will need to regain the good will and respect of the public. Why? Because his status as a media figure means he is totally dependent on his fans. If they abandon him, he will be just another guy trying to hit the ball straight and tap it in the hole.

I do agree--he will resume his career. Maybe, like New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez, who had his own "apology for cheating" moment, it will enhance his focus and dedication to his sport and like A-Rod, he will win a championship and come up big when the pressure is on.

Tiger Woods is an extraordinary, resourceful, and disciplined athele and I think he will conquer his demons and find golf success again. But for professional success as as moneymaker, he still needs to regain the fans respect to win them over to his side.

I personally could have cared less about this. He does not owe an apology to anyone other than his wife, children and his family. Public Figure or no Public Figure, when the lights go out those are the people he is left with, when he decides to retire it is his family that he is left with. It is his skills as a golfer that put him in the spot light in the first place, it is his skills as a golfer that shined more light on a spot that many did not pay attention to in the numbers of which they have over the years, it is his skills as a golfer that has other children that never thought about playing golf, wanting to be golfers now. Corporations saw and still see him as a cash cow, they made plenty while he was hot and lost plenty when the golfer fire went dim because of the spot light on his personal life. As I said time and time again, NO he does not owe anyone but his wife, children and family an apology. He is a man first with many titles attached (husband, father, son and so forth),but an athlete second.

Hi Marquerite:

I'm with you on this--I could care less.

And the one he really does owe his apologoes to are his family because, as you said, "when the lights go out, these are the people he is left with."

And I totally agree with you that he is a man with many titles, husband, father, son--and that these come first before athele and champion.

BUT...

It wasn't his athletic skills that made him a rich man. He could have displayed the exact same skills on the golf course while nobody was watching.

It was his public image that was used by those Corporations that you rightly pointed out have used him as a cash cow. It was a perfectly symbiotic relationship. He made his sponsors a healthy profit and they made him a rich man. They needed each other for maximum success.

But...it was all dependent on whether the public (his fans) wanted to see him in action. If the public doesn't want to follow him any more, his image can't bring him the financial rewards anymore.

Now that his economic viability is damaged, he needs to gain back some respect if he wants to earn the kind of money he is used to. He needs to win back his fans.

He will certainly return to golf and let his natural talents and abilities shine--but he will never earn the same kind of money unless he makes nice with the fans.

He needs them more than they need him.

We can agree to disagree here Richard. Golf is not the only aspect of Tiger Woods and for anyone to assume such would in essence be saying that he does not have the wherewithal to do anything else in life to obtain financial gain. He is far from broke and could venture in many other areas to earn a living, be it at the same level, lower level or a much higher level. It was his skills, I say that because there are other golfers Mickelson being one that was playing golf long before Tiger stepped foot on the green and they did not garner the same appeal. At the end of the day, he owes no one, other than those I mentioned before an apology.
We can agree to disagree because although I see and thoroughly comprehend what your saying, I don't agree with it in totality.

Right, Marquerite--

Sounds like we're about a half an inch apart on this one.

Now if we were on the golf course we would TAP the ball in the hole!

I think we both actually do wish him well in the future, right?

Mozell:

Wow!!! You managed to capture his soul in just a few words: "as far as being a man...I think he is as shallow as an raw egg...and we know what happens when they break...They stink."

Yes, the guy stinks. He HAD to make this public apology, mostly for economic reasons. And you are so right--he is about as spiritually thin as a piece of paper.

Even so, stinky egg people should be able to earn a living!!!

Yes, I do wish him well. For his children's sake. I can't speak to the type of man he is because I've never spent an ounce of time around him, in his personal space nor have we ever had personal conversations. I don't feed into everything the media says because they spin stories the way they want and they also formulate the character of people they way they want to.

Hey Mozell, Who knows if he does or does not spend time with people of color on a regular and unless there are cameras around when he is moving about in all his personal movement. Too much emphasis is being placed in an area that to me, is of no real importance, but that is my opinion.

This has been an amazing conversation. The situation has sure struck a nerve and everyone--myself included--felt like they wanted to weigh in with an opinion or two.

And to think...it all got started by a short blog by Marsha from "THE QUEEN'S CHAIR" who got things rolling by giving her opinion, which was: "I don't know how many of you watched. I didn't and frankly, I don't care."

And I don't really care either.

But something about this fascinates us. It's like the car wreck across the street. We hear the screech of tires and the crash and we just have to look.

Hmmmm!!!

Either Tiger's apologizing, because of ulterior and stealthy motives, or he's tired of being isolated from the familiarity of his community and family. Whatever his problems are, I hope he gets some serious help, because it appears as if he's in the throes of some deep depression.

A man trying to kill is child by fire is less condemned than a president of our country for taking is children to a church taht teachs the same things being taught in schools about being Black in America...lets see how many condemned tose many or even one of theose BIA specials for distorting our culture...they went from teaching us that only the off springs of a slave master and his SINGLE MOTHER 'S CHILDREN ARE A POSTIVE ON AMERICA..THE THE NEXT SPECIAL THEY WENT ALL THE WAY TO AFRICA TO PROVE THAT WE BROUGH ALL OF THIS STRAIGHT FROM AFRICA...REMEMBER WHEN THE HOSTES CALLED THAT AFRICAN MALE A LIER WHEN HE SAID HE WAS DOING ALRIGHT IN SCHOOL AS HIS FATHER IS IN PRISON...please get over helping bring down our own skin color..and this is why tiger woods had to say in public he was not african-american...maybe todays accepted formof accepting those blacks that can pass as anything but being African-American...OR HAS ANYONE THOUGHT OF THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(i NEVE SMILE WHEN WE ARE HELPING TO BRING OUR WON RACE DOWN LIKE THIS AND IN THIS MANNER...but then as long as we continue to see this tea party movement as not the civil rights movement as being in reverse then after they get our presidnet out of office by answering thaos calls at these rallys then..............WE ARE AS STUPID AS THEY TAKE US TO BE....

Mozell, keep putting those "YOs" into your poems (this is our true identity as being survivers of what ever is thrown after us to make us continue to believe we are less than unles we are one of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)...make your art works a time capsule for the next century as you are a true Tiger Woods only you refuse to play the PASSING GAME...lov you all(smile)

I will now leave for good from this blog as my pure "*****" is coming out...no ***** and not the N word as I don't accept it, "I" now own the word ***** as a part of my BIA......you see at 67 years old and being brorn isn KKK country , I remember when ***** and black were the same major and intended insult...

NO HERE IS ANOTHER DOSE OF TRUTH AND REALITY...that America is not willing to accept...

BECAUSE, IT IS IMPOSSIABLE TO MAKE MONEY AS A BUSINESS UNLESS YOU GET MORE COMING FROM THE PRODUCT YOU ARE SELLING(WOODS) than you loose, THEN YOU ARE A FOOL TO TRY AND SELL HIM BEFORE OR AFTER ALL OF THIS...THEREFORE BEING THE PEERSON THAT I AM I DO BELIEVE THE PUBLIC AND THESE SPONSORS AND THOSE GOLF COURSES NEED MR. WOODS MUCH MORE THAN HE HAS EVER NEEDED THEM...

I WILL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL THAT NOT ONLY HAS THIS PeRSON WITH BLACK SKIN HAS MADE A PERSON WITH DARK SKIN CAN BECOME GREAT OR EVEN be able to play IN THESE HIGHST CLASS GOLF ToRNMENTS SO LONG AFTER JACKIE ROBINSON. AND HE IS A BUDDHIST TO BOOT.(smile)

and, it is just great taht even FOX has not attcked him as they did our president for his choice of religion for 25 years...remembver how he had to leave his church and is still being condemned for not having a REGULAR CHURCH TO GO TO..and, his being condemned for taking is children to a Black church and not condemning a man for setting his home on fire and then doing a 9-11 on a not civilian bulding, but a F-E-D-E-R-A-L bulding.(smile)

CAN ONE SAY TIGER WOODS HAS APOLIGIZED TO HIS RELIGIOUS FAITH FOR ABUSING IT SEEKING FAME AND POWER ON THE MAN'S SAY SO OR REQUIRMENTS...NO AND NOR CAN OUR PRESIDENT RETURN TO HIS CHOSEN PLACE OF WORSHIP BECAUSE OF PPUBLIC OPINION COURTS......... truth out...

Marsha, this is the ironic thing about this matter...that is if I understand you have not even seen or heard Woods nor his family speaking about this TODAY, right?!?

This is why "I" for one am so glad taht hear say is not allowed in the actual courts only the courts of public opinions.(smile)

NOW WHERE HAVE I HEARD THE 'JUGGE NOT LESS YE BE JUDGED?!?...

Did, I hear and one say Woods now has said in public, he is a Buddhist and how he apologized for abadoning his life long Buddhist practice and its true value that has helped make him who he was for becoming accepted by the PUBLIC AT LARGE. YOU KNOW LIKE BEING AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND A BUDDHIST TO BOOT WOULD HAVE BEEN TO MUCH OR BARRIERS TO EVEN GET TO BE ACCEPTED ON THE GOLF COURSE...MANYBE PEOPLE STILL CAN NOT GO ON MANY GOLF COURSES TO EVEN PRACTICE BECAUSE OF SKIN COLOR AND RELIGION?????????????????

IS THIS ABOUT HIS FAMILY OR THE PUBLIC BEING ABLE TO ACCEPT HIM AGAIN OR NOT????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we have already taken out what we did not want from his speech, have we not??????????????

Was there not a public opinon frenzy when he said he was not Black????????????????
This is why "I" as a N.D. Buddhist ccontinue to talk about the Buddhist practice demands only one thing and that you take full responsibility for your own actions????????????????????? One does not have to have the blessing of the public to do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!This is only on Tiger Woods, because ony he can live his life...it is on his wife if she is willing to accept this or not and, not on Woods or me or you or anyone else.THIS IS ONLY ON HER......

Another part of the Buddhist practice is to only follow the behaviors of another that does good in beinging peace, and security to themself and their environment, this covers if he gives back to his community or does things that are positive and acceptable as bringing happiness to himself and to others...but, here again only Woods knows what does and does not make him happy...

Only Wodds can step out there and play golf or sign tose contracts, ect. not anyone but him...God, knows he does not have to do it to survive in the sense that he will go homeless or hungry...all beyond this is on the public in how far we are willing to go to make him as superstar or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WAKE UP TO TRUTH AND REALITY BECAUSE THIS IS MORE ABOUT PUBLIC OPINIONS TAHT ON TIGER WOODS OR HIS FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE ARE SPEAKING FOR THEM REMEMBER??????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(smile)

AND, TO ANYONE READING THIS COMMENT....DO YOU BELIEVE THAT IF OUR PRESIDENT GOES OUT AND APOLOGIZE THE THOSE AT THESE TEA PARTY RALLYS/ THIS CPAC CONVENTION THAT ALL WILL BE FOR GIVEN AND THEY WILL BACK HIM IN PUBLIC?

LETS GET REAL OR DID I HEAR BILL CLINTON APOLOGIZING FOR THIS LATEST s*x SCANdAL THAT CAME OUT LAST WEEK..OH, BUT THE PUBLIC IS NOT AWARE OF THE POSITION OUR SECTRARTY OF STATE IS IN.(SMILE)

OH, HOW ABOUT PALIN'S STILL GETTING MONEY FOR THE TAXPAYERS ON TEACHING AGAINST UNMARRIED s*x WHILE SHE HAS HER DAUGHTER OUT THERE AS A REASON TO MAKE HER PRESIDENT...BUT, THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT BLACK NOR BUDDHIST NOW ARE THEY...or am I only playing the race and religion card...are are we ready for a little TRUTH????????????????? smile !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
