These women were W.A.S.P. WOMEN AIRFORCE SERVICE PILOTS. Leading a way where they were the first team of Women on record to fly aircrafts. During the period of WWII these speciality group of women went from ordinary ground citizens to war pilots. They took to flying high, giving up their lives to the commitment to their American country. The group suffered losses, but many braved the battle in a piercless sky of bombing and the overtones of war.
Now, today women pilots have opporutinites of taking flights to the skies without limits. Since then many famous women pilots, and some not so famous are behind the seats of aircrafts all around the world. On March 10, 2010 a ceremony was held that honored many women who flew in WWII with the Congressional Medal of Honor. One of two from Memphis, Tennessee include Lillian Goodman who is still a resident of Memphis, another from Hernado, MS who also recieved the medal is Betty Archibald.
Since then too, black woman pilots have the opportunity to take to the skies.
