The Queen's Chair: My Spring Break (267 hits)

This week, my children are out of school for Spring Break. So this year, I decided to put a spin on it. If they can have a Spring Break, why can't I? I took it a step further. Since my cash funds are low, I decided I wouldn't spend my time being a work-a-holic. One child went to a church day camp and the other is home with me. She was shocked by how much I get done in one day.

I didn't do my column yesterday and I didn't have to hear the alarm clock go off. I took the day off. I did do two loads of laundry, changed all the pillow cases, cleaned the bathroom, cooked dinner, and weeded my guest room of stuff that has piled up during the past two years of my illness. May not seem like a vacation to you, but trust me: it is.

My best friend, Sharon, and I agreed that we work too hard. We have watched other people do things, take elaborate vacations, while we deprived ourself of doing things because we worry about our bills. So we decided that this year, we were going to have more fun. We'd pay our important bills and help each other out: the best way we could.

Last night, we went to a free reading of August Wilson's "Jitney" and saw a bunch of old friends on stage and in the audience. I hadn't laughed that hard in a long time. And I really missed my theatre roots. Our fun continues. Tomorrow, we finally are seeing the show, "Wicked," and on Friday, August Wilson's other play, "Two Trains Running." We're going to get a bite to eat and I don't have to worry about getting kids up early the next day.

Don't misunderstand me. I'm still helping children with homework, taking them to camp and lacrosse practices and completing things on my to-do list. However, this week, I'm taking care of me, too. I have to stop putting myself on the backburner.

Ladies, you would be proud of me. Wicked was wonderful!!!! I treated myself to a keychain. (wink) The Wizard of Oz is my all-time favorite movie. Jitney was divine and Two Trains was good. Next week, I'm checking out The Story, a play about a black reporter that who a Pulitizer Prize-winning story that turned out to be a lie, and the kids are back at school. Have my book signing today, getting flowers for my garden from a friend and then going out for an early dinner with family. Back to the grind on Monday because school is in session. So to speak.
