AGE AND WISDOM (631 hits)

I know that old quote very well..."Wisdom comes with age" However, today I don't see much of that around at all. Wisdom is leaving with age. So many older and seniors are doing what young restless people do. They are doing all kinds of things. Just recently I hear of a great-grand mother's selling and promoting drugs out of her home--even to young people. Then there are the grandmothers shop-lifters who go into stores teaching their grand sons and daughters how to pick up store items without being caught. Teaching the young how to rob and steal. Grand moms and Grand dads also are partakers in many other crimes against laws of the country. They curse too-- and show no respect of persons! Older people whose suppose to know better and do better... What an example for our kids...That quote should read: "Wisdom comes with age." "Not all the time."

I still practice the quote, except I know wisdom comes from God.

I'm done.

I was only just wondering why are seniors setting sometimes a bad example? Is for money mostly, or is it their outlook of growing old with no other kind of hand dealt to help them. You bring up some great points Irma. Elders used to be for the most part the shapers and motivaters of families. Hey!...that's not all true with families now. They have to survive, but they should know doing things outside the law is never wise. Some seniors are worse than the young generations. I figure it's making an impression to be closed watched. We need to remember the Elderly.

Speaking of elderly people:

There once was an old priest who grew tired of his congregation confessing to committing adultery. So one day he shouted, "If I hear one more person confessing to adultery, I'll quit."

Well everbody liked him, so they came up with a code word. The members of the congregation would instead say they have "fallen". This seemed to satify the priest until he died of a ripe old age.

Shortly thereafter, a new priest arrived. After church services one day, the priest approached the city mayor and said to him, "Mayor, you've got to do something about these city streets. People keep telling me they've fallen."

The mayor chuckled, realizing no one told the new priest about the code word. Finally the new priest shook an accusing finger at him and shouted, "I don't know what you're laughing about, because your wife has fallen at least three times this week."

There was a time when our elders had something to connect to. The connection for them was the past and the present, hence, their ability to provide wisdom. There are always reminders or stories of how things were, and a parable connected with the experience. The stories were filled with drama, suspense and how they got over to survive...and those who could be depended on when things got rough ( family and friends) .

We lost most of that.
I believe now, that the social movement towards "progress" is from an unconscious mental state of existence, rather than a conscious awareness of needed strategic steps, which necessitates order and structure for/in the African American experience. Our people wanted so much to be long, and would do, and have done, anything that would lessen the psychological pain and anguish created by those who want to oppress and destroy.

We observe elders being intentionally denigrated by the media through sitcoms and movies. Educators presented in cartoons as buffoons early in a child's home life and pre-school experience . There are no places of honor and recognition for the knowledge, wisdom and understanding of life they have lived and now leave to us.
Yes, we have libraries and Museums, but when is the last time you've seen an elder (70 years and older) giving a presentation or having open dialog and discussion with young people (ages 7 through 21)? He they even been asked?

Wisdom comes with age...All the time!
Wisdom does not only impact the wise, but the unwise as well. For example, the creation of America would not be considered a wise move by those who have suffered from bondage, exploitation, genocide, hate and evil behavior of others.
Yet, to the founding fathers, this was the best move they ever made.
Because those who do not abide by rational ways of thinking often look for irrational measures to conquer and control.

So, to be an "Elder", is to be a person of moral substance and having a conviction of unconditional love. To be and Elder one must first be exposed to elders who live a spiritual life (Not necessarily an organized religious life).
There will always be a respect for age,
but to be an elder is an earned position of honor and respect.
It is to be a Master Teacher in the lives of people in every city, state, country and village.
A position we must have again in order for Human life to be sustained.

So glad am I that I had well examples of elderly family and surrounding mentors too.
--Siebra I enjoyed that story! Had a great moral to it.
--Irma, I always respect your comments openly and I value them.
Okpara- Outstanding outlook in my view of the "Elder" especially how it is an earned position. I can see why you say wisdom comes with age, only when is abided rationally and kept. I want to see that return. I really do.
Great! I'm feeling more optimistic! I learn more too in opinions of others!

Dr. Nosakhere again gives the correct Direction----

Wisdom comes with age...All the time!

Someone that has been around longer just has more experiences and lived the dreams of youth.

and has Paid with their life for Wisdom........

Robert, I know --Isn't is a bit disappointing to see elders lives directed in breaking the laws and living out lives that have no practice of wisdom? Seniors should be looked on as our leaders of wisdom. Some fall through the cracks and loop holes and are these I hate to say are guiding many of of young ones astray.

Cynthia...Another great spotlight of age and wisdom. Grandparents are much younger now---I don't know that gap is widening everyday.

--Grandmothers today wear wigs and weave...and the younger ones...wear braids. Occassionally I do see a silver-haired lady or gentleman.

Me too! I learned so much from the elderly. Their wisdom is surely come about with age. They probably came up with quote "Been there, done that!" because they actually have. Age and wisdom is priceless.

I propose the beginning of the African-American Elders Day!
July 22, 2010.
A celebration with Awards, Gifts, Dinners, Plays and Speeches.
It will be an annual event around the country.
Even whites should be encouraged to recognize their African ancestry, only then a solution for balance will come about.
So, let's campaign for this and do it in every black community in the country.
Deal!

WE must also look at our culture and out ties to the mother land Africa...a culture that is being taught out of us...
! my generation still works for the coming generatinos
2.you know back in the good oldays when we learned form our elders about our valuesand not tv
3. I am from the generation taht fought tooth and nail against a public welfare system that was set up to keep the father out of the home and now it is set u to get the hild out of the home berofe they even get a chnce tolearn how to be a responisble adult looking out for the next generationor is you state unlike mines taht will not halp a preganatn teen if she remains with her family and not move out on her own to a better place to be farther abused by laws set u to prect the male in taking taht welfare check that should go to the child..the drug dealers???
4. In my generatio the older one was especially the female the more respected they were...

5. there was the child of the unwed mother only seen as a blessing to the family as a new member..lets see today the single mother we have accepted is the cause of all of the problems, ect...

6. has anyone considered that if they live long enough they will be the eldeer and no power of labeling one as old will go to eliminate who you are?????

or is tis also in GOD'S hands and the powers that be scientific reportings????

Just my age maybe along with my pride and resistance of the black single mother is the cause of all of this...(smile)

...or maybe it has a lot to do with today our Black churches are more mega business than a house of God now...as I say if you live long enough you will be clasified as an elder and will there be any things leftof the past Black churches left? My heart crys when I remember the says that churches would hold tose friday night fish fry to raise money for the church...today it is the political favors, how much tv coverage one can get and how much money can be made if you are on tv or using GOD to help you win a job, powerful postion...me I have more respect fot calling breaking thelaw breaking especially the laws of the 10 COMMANDMENTS... the law as to me it is EQUALITY!!!!

Thank you so much for this MIISRAEL.And this is the purpose of so many of my post to try and help us all to think from all sides of an issue:

does the elders being put away as if they don't exist as the nursing homes grow more a big business $millionaire maker...and more getting shut down for elder abuse have any thing to do this this as maybe a reblion, trying to keep a roof over one's head, buy meds. be able to her and eat at the same time...

something never heard at least in the Black culture as related to our elders. (smile)

I will never forget I went to my very elderly next door neighbor (who was white) to do an interview once on her for a school paper on someone who was elderly (I was about Cynthia's age at the time)

any way that interview led to me spending may many hours with her for years and until her death so she could tell me about the real raw west which was so much like we see in the western movies ...you see she was samll when her family came west when people moved west in their covered wagons racing to make a land stake when the states came into the American union as states in the mid -west????

Storys and fresh gingerbread figures cookies right out of the wood stove ovens is what my best memories of the elderly ware about...

Too be prefectly honest as a samll child I loved to go to wakes...we got to stay up late and all of those scary stories the adults would tell. I am sure scary sister Cynthia would not have liked these old ghost stories. lol. (smile)
