My countdown has begun. Five days til my trip with my daughter to Seabreeze Amusement Park. Four days til my oldest has her moving up ceremony for high school. My last lacrosse tournament is Saturday. Two weeks until Creation Camp, a week-long, Church Camp for teenagers for my oldest daughter. And then a whole summer with no humming alarm clock going off at 5 a.m. I'm looking forward to that.
I have mixed emotions about the end of the school year. The "mommy morning" slows down a bit. Kids sleep in a bit. I let them sleep in the first week, but then a new summer schedule starts. We were so busy with end of the season lacrosse games, band and chorale concerts, Sunday School activities...my head was spinning. I had my own things going on too...lacrosse meetings, physicals, returning signed papers, house repairs, deadlines... like I said, my head was about to explode. Now there are a few new tasks...my garden, the lawn, donating books and gently used clothes, attending festivals, day trips, reading, stock up on popisicles, working on my new book, and this week includes a BIG food buy.
I now have to listen to the mom "we are bored" comments ( and I will have to remind them that it's vacation for them, but I still have work to do: it's NOT my vacation.), put up with sisterly fights and listen as my tween drops a dime on her sister. I will send them outside to play and they will happily go out and play with neighborhood kids.
Don't get me wrong, I love summer. The mommy taxi comes to a halt. The warmer weather. I get to catch up with friends. More visits to the ice cream palror down the street. Less TV time and more time on my porch.
Yeah, my kids love the last day of school. And they do miss their friends. I, on the other hand, love it for different reasons. I love my kids, love spending time with them, but I can't wait until September. It's a countdown to when they go back to school.
