One hundred years ago, yesterday, Jack Johnson defeated Janes M. Jeffries (one of a number of Great White Hopes) for the heavyweight championship of the world. Johnson's victory sparked race riots in 25 states. Geoffrey Ward's well-researched book is the first about Johnson in 15 years, and it shows us one of the first great black athlete heroes: a man of audacity and unyielding individuality.
