I know of lot of you remember this spoken word poem called, "The Revolution will not be televised" by poet and early rapper Gil Scott Herron whom was Jamaican descent and resided in South Chicago. A lot of times we read things and we take them out of context and can't comprehend their true meaning because we take from what we find comfortable with our fears. Fears are based upon beliefs and definitions we have about our world and our experience. Well recently the news is Shirley Sherrod was ousted for making racists comments which turns out Fox News deliberately took her words out of context and splice her video to make her appear racist when in fact she was trying to unite the poor Black and White. I applaud her attempts and I applaud her understanding of Slavery history when Blacks and Whites suffered indentured slavery and somehow cleverly divided by the Elite.
This Shirley Sherrod story is a prime example of why the Revolution will not televised. The media lies and lies and lies and lies and distorts the information around events in order to make us the viewers form conclusions that they would like for us to believe. To me this is why you should turn off your television and stop allowing the Elite the same people Shirley Sherrod is talking about to control your heart and mind. Revolutions start with free media that's why "Freedom of the Press" is a fundamental principle of the U.S constitution. That's because in revolutions throughout history oppressed people have needed a means to talk to each other outside of the realm of control of the Elite. Many revolutions had their own newspapers and pamphlets that they spread true news about events and occurences that the Elite had already put a spin or twist upon them. This is was done to make sure everyone had the complete story and once the complete story was told everyone knew who the good guys were and who the bad guys were. Plain and simple.
What's disturbing about America is that we believe the Newspaper who are owned by the rich and the Television news who are owned by the rich as well to be apart of that great history of keeping the complete story intact and told without bias. It is one of the reasons oppressed people around the world see Americans who tout this freedom as being apart of keeping the system of oppression in place. We are so thoroughly deceived that we are actually a threat to freedom around the world. Because of our media we marched out to Afghanistan to eradicate so-called "Terrorism" and took away other people's right to choose their own government no matter how brutal or backwards. We marched in Iraq and our presence caused millions of them to die because we believed the lies of our government which is owned and controlled by the rich elite. We believe the lie of September 11th, 2001 that terrorist blew up our buildings with airplanes despite evidence to the contrary. We are so thoroughly deceived by our media that no light of truth can get through that doesn't have CNN, FOX, ABC, NBC, BBC or our local media stamp of approvals attach to it.
So do me a favor turn off your television for a month. Go out and talk to your neighbors. Ask a white friend at work out to dinner and to help them agree offer to pay for it. Talk to them about their world and how they see things and talk to not just them but other people of different descent. For once in America we should defy the laws of segregation the still keep our freedoms from being realized. Eric Holder was correct that we live in hypocrisy we claim to be a country about different races and cultures yet we don't communicate outside of work. We don't go to church with people of different descent and pray together. We don't even play together and that to me is one of the fun filled ways to learn about another person's ideas, beliefs and definitions. This revolution will come to past only when we turn off the control box that has been programming us with hatred and division. A journey of a thousands miles starts with the first step.
