RACHEL MADDOW, July 21 Fox News has run with a few different stories this year that they really pushed all on their own. They weren't mainstream news stories -- they weren't even news, really. They were Fox agenda items, all following a very, very similar narrative. There was the Van Jones controversy, with Fox morphing the president's renewable-energy policy expert into an ex-con who served time after the Rodney King race riots -- not true. The other great Fox News crusade of the past year was against ACORN, an almost all-minority community organizing group which Fox characterized as stealing taxpayer money and an election. More recently, Fox News has crusaded against the New Black Panther Party, after video surfaced of two wackjob blacks at a polling station during the 2008 election. The Bush Justice Department investigated and found that the wackjobs hadn't intimidated voters that day, and Fox News has continued running the same footage over and over and over again. The message? They're coming for you, white people. They're coming for you. Black people are coming for you, to take what's yours. This week Fox News got a new crusade, alerting the world that an "Obama administration official resigned just a short time ago after she was caught on tape appearing to tell an audience that she had used her position to racially discriminate against white farmers." Except that USDA official Shirley Sherrod had told that audience no such thing. Do you notice anything about those four stories -- Van Jones, ACORN, the New Black Panther Party, and now Shirley Sherrod? This isn't about racism. This isn't a story about picking on black people. This is a story about political outcomes, about the tried and true political strategy not of targeting black people but of targeting white people, about making white people feel afraid of African Americans as if they are not fellow Americans but rather a threat to what white people have.

Of course it's the "Southern Strategy" in the 21st Century. With "Fixed" News stirring up the fears of "losing what's OURS to THOSE people," they are the not-so-invisible hand behind the so-called grassroots of the Tea Party! This is NOT journalism, it is the most garish yellow journalism not befitting of the fourth estate. Our news is no longer any different than tabloids like the National Enquirer. When THEY can break news about John Edwards' affair, and THAT is news; we're paying $10 billion a month to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and cannot afford to generate jobs for THIS economy (and that is NOT), our democracy, which out of necessity NEEDS an informed electorate, is slowly, publicly, DYING if not already dead!

What I don't get is why anyone...and I mean ANYONE, including FOX News fans, should give them any kind of credibility anymore?
This is only the latest in a staggeringly long line of lies, deceptions and hysterical charges later proven to be totally false.
REginald is right--this is NOT JOURNALISM.
I would like to see some professional journalists with some integrity blast this organization for what it is--FAUX NEWS.

Hi Irma:
Yeah, I saw his special comments. He made some great points.
But I think he was a little too critical. Well meaning people--like the NAACP--said they were "slookered" and they later realized that they did not handle this well or fairly. It was a mistake all the way around. But there is a world of difference between a well intentioned honest mistake and a malicious effort to distort the truth.

My concern is there any permanent solution between Black Americans and White Americans living in such close proximity physically and psychologically if you will since there is so much whining and complaining since slavery began to the present-day?

I had to just sit and shake my head as the first guest on her show tonight was so totally caught up in disagreeing with her about how our president should fight back at Fox and all of thede snipeds at him and his administration until he totally over looked that he was saying our president sould practice 'DISCRIMINATION which is illegal...
Tehguest said it was correct for our president to come out in defense of Shirley Sherrod but not in defense of VAn Jones...this would require to treat tose in his administration UNEQUAL AND THIS IS AGINST BVBOE, end of story. (smile)

And, although "I believe that Van Jones and ACORN will be back (under NEW MANAGEMENT) in a bigger and better way for the outstanding works they have done and still are doing...that they were sacrificed for the greater good fo rall of America and All Americans in the long term...
and, although "I" no longer practice the "Christian faith, "I" still believe that old saying of my grandmothers using all the time...
