Supreme Court Judges hold back tears while Obama hypes H.R. 5175 DISCLOSE Act (137 hits)

Contact Congress Today: DISCLOSE Act Vote Tomorrow

As you might be already aware, House Speaker Pelosi had to pull the DISCLOSE Act, H.R. 5175, from a scheduled vote last Friday, when widespread outrage erupted over a special exemption for the NRA in exchange for not opposing the bill. Well, the bill is still alive and well with a vote now scheduled in the House for tomorrow, June 24. The Senate leadership has already promised Pelosi that if the House passes the bill, then the Senate will vote on it in time for it to take effect for the elections this fall.

Do you remember how President Obama called out the Supreme Court during his State of the Union address back in January (see video below)? He was referring to the Court’s 5-4 decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that unexpectedly upheld the Constitution and free speech by ruling that corporations, unions, and nonprofit organizations are permitted to make campaign contributions under the First Amendment. After chastising the Supreme Court, Obama urged “Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that helps correct this.”

Justice Grimaces As Obama Criticizes Court
The DISCLOSE Act is the bill that President Obama was asking for in his State of the Union address. It is a direct attack on the free speech rights of corporations and organizations, even online bloggers, during campaigns. For more information about H.R. 5175 read Raven Clabough’s two recent articles, “NRA Trades First Amendment Rights for Second Amendment Rights” and “Dems Not Yet Prepared to Let DISCLOSE Act Go Away.”

Contact your representative and senators today in opposition to this latest attack on free speech.

Earl, I am definitely pro gun ownership. The point of the NRA here is that they would have blocked this bill if not made exempt. That says something about the bill. The fact C4L is against the bill, as not exempt, says something about the bill too.

Clark, I haven't figured out yet what is going on here, but I have a sense it is something sneaky, having to do with consolidation of power, and probably not in the America's besst interests.

I also think the Supreme Court erred, but I have a feeling this bill uses the court's decision as an excuse for other motives.

I need to read the bill, but there is a good chance that would not provide the answer.

Bottom line is I am suspicious of our government, that most of what they do is to benefit themselves.

What we know is this is about lobby money, not to say it is not about other things too. But can we really expect our government to cut off its lobby money?

But they may wish to cut off lobby money to others.

These people tend to tack on so many, many more trailer bills on to aNY GIVEN bill (S), I doubt if members of Congress know half the time what they are voting for or voting against...

"I" personally love the word Public Option is going to live to fight another day. (smile)

and as far as gun ownershiip is concerned it is the belief that this gun is not going to do any harm to me, my friends, ect. that is so needed over coming and even better...RESPECT FOR THE POWER OF THE GUN WHEN IT COMES UP AGAINST IRRESPONSIABLE HUMAN BEING'S BEHAVIORS. (NUP)

@ Clark, It is my belief that Congress and our Supreme Court erred in refusing to face the reality taht our president and his vice- president are not where they are by way of lobby monies and the our president is a Constitution attorney and his wife is a business attorney...plus our presidnet now has public opinion in his favor for him to now go kick some A-Z-Z. He has already two S.P. members and _______to go of his choosings.(otfl) ((smile)))
