A young mixed-blood Negro/Indian/White kid growing up in New Jersey in the 50's, for years I was the smartest kid in my mostly all-white class. But I was never allowed to forget "my place" by teachers, counselors and other students. After school I went from factory jobs to management positions with IBM, a company I remained with for nearly 25 years. And with no college I became a professional musician (currently in the Joe Payne Band), an author, an entrepreneur and a public speaker, while also racing motorcycles. Life was both good and bad. I eventually raised a large family, but only after one daughter died at age three and several friends were killed in accidents..
Book editor, Founder and Director of the Warwick Valley Writers Association, I have held weekly writers workshops since 1990.
As a writer, I am dismayed by the lack of enthusiasm book agents and publishers have shown toward my latest manuscript titled "Diary of an 'N-Word' ". This very important untold story of what a young "colored' boy experiences growing up in the 50's in New Jersey--not the South--invariably is rejected by agents and publishers with the reply, "It's a compelling account but not right for us." I want to self-publish my book to give a personal account of history that won't be found in our traditional history books, and with my experience on talk radio and TV, I am able to effectively promote it as I have done for other books I have written (Follow The Right Leader, Jack In The Pulpit, Come Die With Me).
Kickstarter.com is an excellent site, touted by CNN Financial News as a way to promote entrepreneurial projects. The following link will direct you to a new autobiographical account of a "colored" boy's encounter with bigotry, in the North...in the 50's.
