My kids got a day off from school. The banks were closed. Government and federal agencies had a mid day vacation.I hoping that people remembered it was Veteran's Day.
Each year, we have millions of men and women who serve our country. The defend our country and its freedoms. They sacrifice a great deal. Time away from loved ones and jobs. Some veterans come home in one piece. Some never come home and others are seriously injured. The scars don't stop there.
It's a shame that the women and men who defended this country often end up homeless, see the horrors of war up close and personal, take alcohol and drugs to ease their pain, and for some women vets lose custody or access to the children. Other mothers married or engaged to vets must deal with raising children alone, worry about making ends meet because the source of their income is gone and bill collectors don't care: they just want their money.
We take for granted those sacrifices and think that they know what they signed up for. We would be wrong. It's horrible and deplorable that some Anti-War protesters picket their funerals as families deal with their grief. That's just not right. All the veterans did was defend the American Dream; yet they get no access to them.
Is that anyway to thank them. I mean really? So if you think this is just a day off...think again. Say than you to a veteran today; it's the very least you can do.
