First let me start by saying congratulations on your daughter taking the first step towards coming into the knowledge of Islam. Now on to the subject at hand:
Malcolm X, in one of his TV interviews explained that during slavery time the slave master named the so-called Negro after themselves. The Nation Of Islam teaches us that once we come into the knowledge of Islam, the knowledge of ourselves, we replace our slave name with an X. The X in mathematics representing the unknown.
Both of my parents received their X when they converted to Islam in 1974 and took on the last name Muhammad when they married in 1976. Since we've been disconnected or cut off from our own history, our own past, our own culture, our own land we use the X, the unknown, until we get back to our country.
Upon joining the Nation of Islam, Malcolm changed his last name to ‘X’ as a symbolic gesture that he would reject his slave name. He also argued that because ‘X’ was a brand the slavemasters often burnt on the upper arms of slaves, that his brethren should never forget what white slave masters did to their ancestors.

Thank you david for this post...we do so need to learn about each other's religions beyond following the rules of just looking at, skin color and dress ,ect. to keep us in igronance as in what the definition of PREJUDICE aka. PRE JUDGING REALLY is. (smile)
