POPE CALLS HEALTH CARE “INALIENABLE RIGHT”; URGES GOVERNMENTS TO PROVIDE UNIVERSAL COVERAGE, Nov. 19, 2010 (308 hits)

POPE BENEDICT XVI: “IT IS THE MORAL RESPONSIBILITY OF NATIONS TO GUARANTEE ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE FOR ALL OF THEIR CITIZENS REGARDLESS OF SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC STATUS OR THEIR ABILITY TO PAY.”

At an international papal conference on health care yesterday at the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI and other Catholic church leaders said it is the “moral responsibility of nations to guarantee access to health care for all of their citizens, regardless of social and economic status or their ability to pay.” Saying access to adequate medical care is one of the “inalienable rights” of man, the pope said, “Justice in health care should be a priority of governments and international institutions.”

The pope lamented the great inequalities in health care around the globe. While people in many parts of the world aren’t able to receive essential medications or even the most basic care, in industrialized countries there is a risk of “pharmacological, medical and surgical consumerism” that leads to “a cult of the body,” the pope said.

“The care of man, his transcendent dignity and his inalienable rights” are issues that should concern Christians, the pope said.

Because an individual’s health is a “precious asset” to society as well as to himself, governments and other agencies should seek to protect it by “dedicating the equipment, resources and energy so that the greatest number of people can have access.”

In a separate statement, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, said, “Justice requires guaranteed universal access to health care,” adding that minimal levels of medical care are “a fundamental human right.” “Governments are obligated, therefore, to adopt the proper legislative, administrative and financial measures to provide such care,” the cardinal explained, saying that, “The governments of richer nations with good health care available should practice more solidarity with their own disadvantaged citizens.”

Inalienable human rights are rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled by virtue of the fact that we are human.

The controversy is liberty. An aspect of liberty is that it is not slavery. To work for the benefit of self is liberty. To work for someone else's benefit against my will, i.e. when I need to work for someone else's benefit in order have my own benefit, that is a type of slavery, and my inalienable right to liberty then become alienable. Notice I used the words "against my will". Socialism is force. Charity is freely given.

As someone that pays: Federal, State and Local taxes under no circumstances should my taxes only be used to pay the salaries and provide health care for the Politicians and THEIR families, which in some cases they receive for life, while the common citizen is left to choose between going to a doctor and calling out from work to lose a day's pay or to wait until they are so sick they need to go to the emergency room. Also, unless one is a business owner working for self then it is for their direct benefit, but if one is working at someone else business/company for a paycheck then they are already working for someone else's benefit.

Irma, I used to give to a cause called World Vision. The reason I gave to them was because about 90% of what I gave was passed on to the people who needed it. What percentage of our tax dollars gets passed on to those who need it? More government in fact has the opposite effect of what we want/need.

Excellent point! When comparing health CAre systems of industrialized nations around the world, the World Health Organization rated the US system at #37.

Not something to be proud of.

Most people I know--myself and my family included--have had some frustrating and demoralizing run-ins with health insurance companies. My best friend in the whole world (now deceased) had to beg the insurance company to provide her life-saving medication as it was running out. It was a constant battle. Finally her disease got her.

Another friend who had no health insurance, put off going to the doctor because she could not pay for it--until she was so sick she had no choice. By the time her disease was diagnosed as late stage cancer it was too late to do anything. She has now passed on--kileed, I would say, by the fact that she was not able to get health care coverage.

Millions of people have similar stories.

That is why one of the msot significant laws passed by the Obama Administration and congress was the Health CAre Law. it's not perfect. It will need to be revised and adjusted because the problem is so complex. But, it is a start.

The free market system in Health Care does not work. Patient Health care and compay profits are mutually exclusive goals. You can't have both.

@jAKE, THE jAPANESE have a test to get into kindergarden...the Japanese work to not disgrace the family...the Japanes have jobs fo rlife and also have housing provided by their jobs...but most of all they...

don't eat much meat, don't cook all of teh natural healthful tings out of their foods, respect the power of drugs...use natural hea...oh and maybe even more important they respect each others legal and moral rights, example,ling medicines and most of all they exercise each and every day in th epublic parks/ their jobs provide space...no they don't use machines they use theri bodies to exercise,

youcan park your car of bike and even leave it unlocked and days later it will still be there..

m point is it all goes back to taking full responiablilty for one's own action..or maybe it is because they don't have a nation taht abuses their neighbor in teh name of a higher power...

oh and they don't send their jobs to china...and another thing you may not know Jake...those small cars taht have now taken on as the correct things to drive...the man who invented the small car engine could not sell it in amy place in America(samller engine less money for the rich but great for the poor) any way he gace this invention to Japan and the rest is history...now lets get back towhy we just voted intooffice those same people who refuses to help the voters get the same health care that they themselves have or do we teh voter know this and just don't care?!?

those inD.C. even have teh public option taht they got voted in for keeping us from having it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! @STEVE. remember what I said about reward or punishment is being over shadowered by the need to use from slavery to the divil made me doit rather than take responisability for ones own choices the make...

You choose to pay those taxes because you believe to not do so going to jail is going to be less painful tahn complainig about you paid your legal dues...

and, and being educate also comes with this...if you don't want government in your life then don't vote...because it is the vote taht determines how the govErnment OF TH EPEOPLE WORKS. (SMILE)

OR YOU CAN CHALLENGE IT BY GETTING LOCKED UP AND TAKING YOUR CASE ALL TEH WAY TO THE SUPREME COURT...BECAUSE THIS AND ONLY THIS IS THE WAY TO GET THE LAWS ALREADY ON THE BOOKS AKA THE CONSTUTITION CHANGED, ECT....BUT JUST CAMPLAINING ABOUT SOMEONE IS NOT DOING WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO DO IS A FORM OF REFUSING TO BE YOUR PERSONAL S-L-A-V-E!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

educate!!!Educate!!!educate!!! the medicines taht you pay all of that money for is just things gotten from Mother Nature's land water, ect. put chemicals in them and sell them at a price one can not afford...

our doctors are just what we use to call witches, witch doctors because they study the problems you come to them with and provide the medications to help you get well...something else taht ahs become so expencive the average citizen can not afford...

the knowledge tah we have natural healing powers has been taught out of us..the sings of a child being sick is they will stop playing and not eat heavy foods...how much do we pay a soctor to tell us to ddringk lots of liquids and get pleanty of rest?????????????

...SO SORRY i LIED AS i BELIEVE THIS TO BE A BETTER EXAMPLE OF "DOING SOMETHING AGAINST ONE'S WILL...which is a lot like blaming God for the way one CHOSES OT LIVE THEIR OWN LIVES...


even slaves were given a choice...and because our natural instinct is to survive and delay going to heaven for as long as we can because to get there one must D-I-E...

the slaves were given the choice, do what you are told(and your reward would be life and not a whipping to with in one inch of you life or some thing else taht would not be rewarding)

inalienable roghts is once again freedom of choice...some salves chose slavery...some chose death / going to heaven. lol...

some were able to earn enough money to buy their freedom...and if one does not believe that lie about slaves could not read and write some wrote documents to proe they were free...some just spent therivaluable time and sometimes all of their lives,,complaining and being dissatisfied for what otheres did or did not do for them...C-H-O-I-C-E (accroding to logic) of control over your life and even your death if that is your choice...(smile)

...oops, "I" totally left of "inalienable" rights mean NATURAL RIGHTS...and as in Siebra's poem that I love so much is it is about another inalienable right CHOICE...EXAMPLE,

I AM SUCH A GREAT COOK, I COOK AT THE LEVER OF A 4 STAR CHEF EARNS ABOUT WHAT AN HOUR???and, yet i cook for my friends and family for free, my choice...I don't charge my children money to keep my grandchildren and yet I don't consider myself a slave...oh nad if I did charge them, they would pay, but it would alinate me from myown self and my choice to be a grandmother and play that role instead...again my choice...


in truth I am a socialist, because I am family oriented the same way I know America is not a democratic country , because if it was poor people would be president and presidents would walk to and from work if they had no gas money for their car...Congress would not get paid for working a full week when theyonly work part time...

so please son't take this as an attack on you...please take it as an attack on tunnel vision...(smile)

thanks and honestly...I will not say any more...just wanted to help with what my favorite politician was trying to say...loooool (smile)

oh and yes he did have slaves and if he did not he would not be one of our ameican presidents as he would not have been qualified...poor people could not afford slaves the same way poor people cannot afford to get people to work for them unlsss it is family like a WIFE, MOTHER , ECT.?????? @ Steve, it may help if you start to look at some things are NATURAL...EXAMPLE,

"I" doubt if someone saying that the great oak tree stems fro a little acorn, we would end up in a religious, mine is right and yours is wrong over this or the oak seed female and male were not married when the came to gether to make tis all happen now would we...but , I could be wrong because this could be against creation laws and natural happenings...

you know like Mother NATURE' air if cut off you can predict your own death!!!?!? is a fact!!! (smile)

but, this maybe a chance that those on teh right will be affected by this about their own voters? lol (smile)
