"Passing" Life in Black and White (1147 hits)

"Passing"
Life in Black and White
by Toi Derricotte

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sure most people don't go around all the time thinking about what race they are. When you look like what you are, the external world mirrors back to you an identity consistent with your idea of yourself. However, for someone like me, who does not look like what I am, the mirrors are broken, and my consciousness, or lack of consciousness, takes on serious implications. Am I mentally "passing"?

All my life I have passed invisibly into the white world, and all my life I have experienced that sudden and alarming moment of consciousness when I remember I am black. It may feel like I'm emerging too quickly from deep in the ocean, or touching an electric fence; or like a deer stuck in the headlights of an oncoming car. Sometimes in conversation with a white person who doesn't know I'm black, suddenly a feeling comes over me, a precursor—though nothing at all has been said about race—and I either wait helplessly for the other shoe to drop, or try desperately to steer the conversation in another direction, or prepare myself for painful distinctions. My desire to escape is indistinguishable from my "blackness," my race, and I am filled with shame and fury.

People have asked why my parents, my grandmother and I never "passed" over into the white world. It was unthinkable. With my dark grandfather driving, my grandmother and I would ride in the backseat of my grandfather's Cadillac as if we were being chauffeured. We'd shop the aisles at Saks Fifth Avenue when there wasn't even a black elevator operator.

On the one hand, there was always a feeling of anxiety that something would betray what we really were; on the other, I think we were really quite self-possessed, almost arrogant. We saw ourselves, with all our struggles and complexities, as rich in culture and history, fierce, determined, strong, and even beautiful. While we wanted the privileges white people had, we had contempt for what we saw as their pale lives.

I truly cannot remember when I first learned I was black. It is as if every experience I have had of realizing I am black, all the way back to grade school and before, is tainted with that fear of discovery, of being recognized as black. Now I realize that the depression that made me begin the work of this book was really a first re-memory of "killing" voices from my childhood. It was like feeling returning in a limb that has been asleep....

Exactly and this is just how Mrs. Toi writes.... the abuse from the white race and her fears of racisim from within the white race. I like one of her stories when she tells of how whenever she went with the Realtor alone they'd show her the nice homes and then when ever her husband (dk skinned) would go looking with her .... they's take them to the lower class neighborhood. So what she would house hunt alone... and then at night she would take her husband around to the different houses she'd look at and have to describe the inside of the houses to him.....

I have a very close family associate that looks white although she could pass for all white she stay with her race of black. If you saw her you would surely say she is white. I think this woman has opened up all the secrets of denying your race in that she came forth to acknowledge her true heritage. Sounds like a fascinating story of life along racial lines. Extraordinary...

Thanks Honey Bee for this beautiful post and when I first saw the title of this blog I started laughing and after readint the article...I know what had caused me to laugh...I was thinking if there is something called what race is your child rage?!? even if it goes down on teh books as assault with a deadly weapon taht is not a car...but a hospital waiting room chair???

My White friend who has the children with a Black father ended up with a charge like this...NOw after having waited for hours i a hospital emergance in the middle of the night with her sick son...this White busy body waiting there also took this route to make small talk with my firend...she asked her whose child was taht because she must be such a good friend to be there with the child...when she said it was her child, the idiot had nerve to aks if she was sure it was her child...next step jail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is not funny, but it is funny because people can do some strange things...but when a mother is tired, scared and already mad at the world for having to wait that long...never ever put your self in a position for her to take all of her pent up anger on you...especially when she don't like White people to begin with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

and, the moral of this story is White people abuse White people, so don't let anyone fool you on this. (otfl) (smile)

And lov, what you just said is 100% true is why we have been lead by the nose by the powers that be as in racism to be able to "KEEP US IN OUR PLACE" because : NOT BEING WANTED and HAVING THE RIGHT TO GO / BE TREATED AS HUMAN ENOUGH TO BE TREATED, SEEN AS EQUAL is different .

aND, PLEASE DON'T FORGET OR PLEASE UNDERSTAND TAHT THOSE SAME PLACES SHE COULD SING IN AND BRING IN LOTS OF MONEY, SHE COULD NOT STAN IN ON HER OWN BUT SHE COULD WITH HER WHITE HUSBAND and this is not taht she wanted to be wanted by these people as this is why they so wanted her there to sing in the first place. Right (smile)

,,,like in the 60s it was not about going to these places, we could go there as labor and as buyers, but we had to be treated as not just different but defecient...so please let a lot of our people know that it was a lie then and now the we ssid "we wanted to go to white schools because we said WE WANTED THE RIGHT TO ATTEND AN PUBLIC SCHOOL WE CHOOSE...notice how that was ended right away by ...BUSSING?...

I BET WE DON'T GET IT JET HERE IN ANOTHER CENTURY WE ARE STILL BLOCKED OUT...REMEMBR TIGER WOODS AND EACH TIME WE HERE STILL...

THE FIRST BLACK?!? nope we still don't get it. (nup)
