Wisconsin Man Posts “No Negros Allowed” Sign On Future Business (220 hits)

Milwaukee — A sign excluding black people from a future business is enraging some people in a small town. Now, the man who put it up is speaking out.

Federal and State law says if the business is open to the public, prohibiting people based on race is illegal. If the man’s proposed gentlemen’s club was going to be a private club, then an African American historian says he could discriminate. Legalities aside, his is a sign that many say is appalling.

“If I’ve got a problem with you it’s going to be on the front of my store,” says Mark Prior.

Prior posted his ‘No Negros Allowed’ sign after he says he had some problems with black people in the past and needed to make a policy against them.

I’m going to stick to my guns because I think I have the right as a business owner to reject service to anyone. It’s not all the black people there are just a few bad ones,” Prior says of his problems in the past. Prior wants to open a gentlemen’s club in a building next to the Abbotsford city hall and library. He says he moved his sign inside after someone with the city asked him to remove it. “Our mistake is sometimes we look for logic in something that is just plain stupid,” says Dr. Selika Ducksworth-Lawton, an African American historian at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Ducksworth-Lawton says she feels Prior is out to get attention. She says the second he opens his business, he’ll be in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Read entire article at WEAU.com

This is just appalling to me. I don't know how someone at this day and time could think they could do something so discriminative and get away with it. Goes to show that racism is alive and well and we still have stupid people in the world.!

Hello Anita,

Why should it be appalling to you or any Black American that a White American does not want your business? In addition, Mr. Prior said he had problems with Blacks in the past. Is that not reason enough for him to say no Negroes allowed?

I believe that if Black Americans had a portion of this continent your feeling of appalling would never exist, now would it?

The Chinese and Arab stores and restaurants never put up a sign to hire Blacks from the neighborhoods they are located in. Does that mean you can call your business a Family Business and not be required to hire outside of your race?

Oh Harry you are going to work your private issues into any and every situation. You will just not let it go, will you. It's appalling and disheartening to me to see a white man or even a black man out and out state that he doesn't want blacks in his business, this being the times as they are. Your private residence is another story, but a public business should be open to the public. Its the law and discriminatory actions have been taken against said owner.
So what, I’ve had problems with whites and blacks in the past. Doesn't mean I will stop excepting their business. Harry blacks in America are not going anywhere. I already told you this country was built on the backs of my people, which means it belongs as much to me as anyone.
@Sista Helen, this isn't about hiring, although that’s another issue, but I completely understand what you mean. Its simply allowing a black to cross the thresh hold of a public business. I'm from NY and the Arabs, Chinese etc have to hire blacks for their businesses, only because they don't know how to have open dialect with us in order to sell their merchandise to us, so they use us to make money off of us. Crazy huh!

Hello Anita,

You often times say that Black Americans are not going anywhere as if though I have said that Black Americans are going to another continent.

Black Americans are going to inherit a portion of what we know now as White America. In other words, think in terms of it this way. The borders of South and North Carolina to the Canadian borders and from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean Black Americans are going to inherit. So, of course, we are not going anywhere. We are just going to assume responsibilities we never had before which is sovereignty or complete independence. We are going to have our own foreign policies with other foreign countries. We are going to have our own government. White America will be our strongest ally. Is sovereignty something you might want?

While you are thinking on small and petty things such as small businesses and White people do not want Negroes in their place of business I am thinking about the maximum which is inheriting a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders. So, is sovereignty something you could handle?

Everything that I say is going to happen. I am Black America's first genuine prophet. I am too Black Americans what Moses was to the children of Israel.
