The 'Government Takeover' of Health Care, and Other Whoppers of 2010 (617 hits)

Politifact tabulates the year's biggest political lies and half-truths.
Our friends at the nonpartisan Politifact watch American politics in the way that would make most people’s stomachs churn. All year, they chronicle every bit of political discourse, every hysterical pundit and every government vow or rally cry in a sometimes quixotic effort to separate truth from fiction.

Now, in the traditional end-of-year retrospective, all the lies have been tabulated. And during a year of enormous whoppers, the site’s editors have identified the biggest deception of all:
The so-called government takeover of health care.

It’s possible to say that the Democrats’ 2010 health-care reform will increase government regulation, which it will. It’s legitimate to say that it may cost more than President Obama vowed, because it might. And it’s possible to have a constitutional argument, which several federal courts have done, about the legal mandate to purchase insurance.
But government takeover, according to the site’s scribes, is wholly inaccurate. It carries the implication that the U.S. health care system will begin to mirror those in the U.K. and Canada, where the government literally runs hospitals and employs doctors. That, ironically, is what the most liberal Democrats had wanted. But the law they got fell far short, thus making the “government takeover” meme a pretty big stretch.

Instead, it was used as an obvious scare tactic. "Takeovers are like coups," conservative message man Frank Luntz wrote in a 28-page memo to Republican leaders during the heat of the health-care debate last year. "They both lead to dictators and a loss of freedom."

As for runners-up, Politifact’s staff indicts Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), who famously claimed last month that Obama’s November trip to trip to India would cost $200 million per day, which it didn’t. There was also Florida governor-elect Rick Scott’s indignant accusation that the stimulus package didn’t create one single private-sector job (it has). And of course Rep. Charles Rangel’s textbook example of wishful thinking, telling reporters that “the ethics report [about his alleged violations] exonerates me,” which it did not.

Politifact has the whole list of half-truths and untruths on its site.

WOW! I spent nearly two years working closely with the healthcare reform act (advocacy summits, teleconferences, etc. - see previous blogs for accuracy) and I never saw any o f those 'politifact' folks present when the persons suffering under the traditional healthcare system were testifying.......the stories could bring you down to your knees in tears...including mine.

When the Social Security Act was first passed, the same sort of naysayers launched attacks and gradually Social Security evolved to what it is today. Do we get rid of it or improve it? Hmmmm....

BEAUTIFULLY DONE!!!

Glad to see a major non-partisan news organization with serious credibility has finally put that one to rest as a lie--and a damn lie at that.

The problem is--too many people still believe it!

Did they mention Mr. President's promise not to sign it without the Public Option?

As I re-read the 'Politifacts,' I see that they were not promoting the lies about a government takeover...I apologize, but I sure hope that we citizens take a more proactive role in correcting the lies and untruths by supporting the President in making a change for the good of America. It's never easy to change old habits into good and so many, many folks have been spoiled by the old factions and will buck hard against change...that's where we must stand firm and push so that our children will have a better country. Happy Holidays BIA Family!

Thank God for companies like Politifacts to come out and tell the truth when so many lies were being spewed about the government. Some of their facts, even I didn’t agree with but had to concur as to their findings. They do their homework. Problem is the company is not there to stand on the podium for or against the president, just to state the facts, which is one of the reasons the truth had problems coming out. What people like us need to do is take said information and get it out to the people to counter attack people like, Rush, Sarah, FOX, and so many others who are putting out lies! We have to remember, we still have a voice and though it may be small, when many of us come together, it creates a loud boisterous voice and we will be heard.

I saw on The Ed Show @MSNBC not too long ago, an interview wit Rev. A. Sharpton on they were sending a petition to Congress to go after the radio station owners holding them responsiable for the actions of those like Rush. As far as teh Fox network goesthey want the network's news channel liscense pulled by the FCC...They say the public are the real owners of the public airwaves therefore the public as a body of complaints saying this is hate speech and not protected speech must be listened to in this matter. (smile)
