The Geneva Bible of 1560 and the Apocrypha (4043 hits)

For Anita, Irma, Ms. LaDonna, et al.

The Geneva Bible was a precursor to the King James Bible of 1611. It was produced in Geneva by the exiled Reformers, most notably John Calvin. It was the Bible used by the Puritans that first came to America, and William Shakespeare as well. The King James Bible drew from the Geneva Bible, but had a pronounced Anglican leaning, with respect to the Apocrypha, combined with a distaste for the commentary found in the Geneva Bible.

An example of this commentary is The Argument given at the head of the Apocrypha. This is from a facsimile edition of the original 1560 printing. I have kept the spelling, but converted the letter forms as necessary:

"These bokes that follow in order after the Prophetes unto the Newe testament, are called Apocrypha, that is bokes, which were not received by a comune consent to be red and expounded publikely in the Church, nether yet served to prove any point of Christian religion, save in asmuche as they had the consent of the other Scriptures called Canonical to confirm the same, or rather whereon they were grounded: but as bokes proceding from godlie men, were received to be red for the advancement and furtherance of the knowledge of the historie, & for the instruction of godlie maners: which bokes declare that at all times God had an especial care of his Church and left them not utterly destitute of teachers and meanes to confirme them in the hope of the promised Messiah, and also witnesse that those calamities that God sent to his Church, were according to his providence, who had bothe so threatened by his Prophetes, and so broght it to passe for the destruction of their enemies, and for the tryal of his children."

Jake, and don't forget Tyndale's fate:

In 1535, Tyndale was arrested by church authorities and jailed in the castle of Vilvoorde outside Brussels for over a year. He was tried for heresy, strangled and burnt at the stake. The Tyndale Bible, as it was known, continued to play a key role in spreading Reformation ideas across Europe.

Irma, the King James Bible had much to do with the Divine Right of Kings. The Geneva Bible was against this idea. Charles I is the one you refer to:

Charles I (19 November 1600 – 30 January 1649) was the second son of James VI of Scots and I of England. He was King of England, King of Scotland, and King of Ireland from 27 March 1625 until his execution in 1649.[1] Charles engaged in a struggle for power with the Parliament of England, attempting to obtain royal revenue whilst Parliament sought to curb his Royal prerogative which Charles believed was divinely ordained.

Hello Saint,

You said this, "King James VI was a so-called black man….Quite a few people on BIA thought I was crazy when I presented this data."

It is not a matter of you being crazy. It is a matter of you implying that if King James was a Black man then he was a Black American man born out of the ashes of slavery as we, Black Americans are. My point is that you what apps salute me wrong. King James was not of my race, Black Americans. King James was not a descendent of my people, Black Americans that came from when White Americans bred themselves with the African slaves they purchase from the slave traders over a period of 300 years that ended in 1865.

You seem to think that all dark skinned people are the same people and that is not the case. A Nigerian is not the same as the people of New Guinea. The Ethiopians are not the same people as Black Americans. If you pay attention you will know that all blackbirds are not the same birds. Some blackbirds are Crows and some are Ravens. I do not understand why you can not understand this point.

In addition, who translated the Bible has nothing to do with Black Americans. Black Americans are not written about anywhere in the Bible. The Bible is not Black America's religious book of guidance. It is a history of the Jewish people and how God help them. The Bible mainly belongs to the Jewish people and the European Gentiles since they have adapted the religion of Christianity through Emperor Constantine. Therefore, the Bible has no relevance to Black Americans except the book of Exodus when you compare and contrast Black America's plight with the children of Israel. Likewise, God has begun to do the same for Black Americans by anointed me as Black America's first genuine prophet that would lead Black Americans into sovereignty on a fertile portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders.

Tell me what you think.

@Steve, thanks because "I" never knew this...but now you have just begun the need for more study. example. isn't this the king that the Puritians over threw and ruled England for a short period of time? lol (smile)

and, since Catholics don't call themselves Christians...Christanity did not come to England until Henry the 8th could not get the Pope to grant him a divorce. lol...
