I'm sorry, but I find this extremely offensive. The U.S. needs to address our own problems, not Egypt's. Who died and made us God?

You're welcome Irma. My reply was not to you, we crossed in the mail again. This was just my own gut reaction.

Irma, just think of all the times we did not stand up for democracy. And who will be there when our own government shuts down OUR Internet. Maybe Mubarak will still be around to give back the lecture he just got?

But really, I think it will soon be China telling us how we should be Communists.

It's interesting, I've never looked too closely at the political system in Egypt. Here's something from Wikipedia. Egypt is a Republic, has a Constitution, and the President and others are Elected. Not all the people are satisfied with their Government. Hmm...

The main problem I have with Mr. Obama's speech is that it was public. As one Sovereign duly constituted government to another Sovereign duly constituted government, I think this communication would have been better left private. From Wikipedia:

Egypt has been a republic since 18 June 1953. Since the declaration of the republic, four Egyptians have served as presidents. The first President to take office was President Mohamed Naguib. The fourth and incumbent president is Mohamed Hosni Mubarak who has been the President of Egypt since October 14, 1981, following the assassination of former President Mohammed Anwar El-Sadat. Mubarak is currently serving his fifth term in office. He is the leader of the ruling National Democratic Party. Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif was sworn in as Prime Minister on 9 July 2004, following the resignation of Atef Ebeid from office.

Legislative branch
Main article: History of Parliamentary life in Egypt

Parliament meets for one eight-month session each year; under special circumstances the President of the Republic can call an additional session. Even though the powers of the Parliament have increased since the 1980 Amendments of the Constitution, the Parliament continues to lack the powers to balance the extensive powers of the President.

The People’s Assembly (Maglis El-Shaab)

The People's Assembly is the principal legislative body. Out of the assembly’s 454 deputies, 444 are directly elected while no more than 10 may be appointed by the President (article 87 of the Constitution). The Constitution reserves fifty percent of the assembly seats for ‘workers and peasants’. The assembly sits for a five-year term but can be dissolved earlier by the President. All seats are voted on in each election. Four hundred seats are voted on using proportional representation while the remaining forty-four are elected in local majority votes.

The People’s Assembly may force the resignation of the executive cabinet by voting a motion of censure. For this reason, the Prime Minister and his cabinet are necessarily from the dominant party or coalition in the assembly. In the case of a president and assembly from opposing parties, this leads to the situation known as cohabitation. While motions of censure are periodically proposed by the opposition following government actions that it deems highly inappropriate, they are purely rhetorical; party discipline ensures that, throughout a parliamentary term, the government is never overthrown by the assembly.

The Consultative Council (Maglis El-Shura)

The Shura Council is the 264-member upper house of Parliament created in 1980. In the Shura Council 176 members are directly elected and 88 members are appointed by the President of the Republic for six-year terms. One half of the Shura Council is renewed every three years.

The Shura Council's legislative powers are limited. On most matters of legislation, the People’s Assembly retains the last word in the event of a disagreement between the two houses.

Parliamentary elections

There currently exist eighteen recognized political parties from across the political spectrum. The formation of political parties based on religion is prohibited by the Constitution. The official opposition and political pressure groups, like the Muslim Brotherhood, are active in Egypt and make their views public. They are represented at various levels in the political system. However, power is concentrated in the hands of the President of the Republic and the National Democratic Party which retains a super-majority in the People's Assembly.

The November 2000 Parliamentary Elections are generally regarded to have been more transparent and better executed than past elections. This is due to the new Law put into force establishing universal judicial monitoring of polling stations. On the other hand, opposition parties continue to lodge credible complaints about electoral manipulation by the government. Moreover, many Egyptians feel their votes are being monitored by poll workers, and could face retribution for their votes. There are significant restrictions on the political process and freedom of expression for non-governmental organizations, including professional syndicates and organizations promoting respect for human rights which have been greatly loosened up in the past five years.

Below the national level, authority is exercised by and through governors and mayors appointed by the central government and by popularly elected local councils.

Political parties and elections

According to the Egyptian Constitution, political parties are allowed to exist. Religious political parties are not allowed as it would not respect the principle of non-interference of religion in politics and that religion has to remain in the private sphere to respect all beliefs. In addition, political parties supporting militia formations or having an agenda that is contradictory to the constitution and its principles, or threatening the country's stability such as national unity between Muslim Egyptians and Christian Egyptians.

Irma, it would be a much easier path for me to work in cybersecurity for the government, rather than to become a teacher. As you say there is already a great shortage. I get many, many emails about this.

And Irma, another thing that strikes me in this video. I seem to notice some graying at the temples of Mr. Obama. Do you think it's authentic?

Steve my gut reaction is please Americans pay close attention to what is being said and you will see what is wrong in our own country. example,

Now I am hearing how if they have to take the oil farther tahn the S. Canal it will send the price of oil up...now here is where we come in...

IF THE OIL WE GET FROM ALASKA WAS PUT ON TRUCKS AND TAKEN ACROSS THIS COUNTRY IT WOULD NOT ONLYPROVIDE JOBS FOR TRUCKERS AND TEH PLACES THEY STOP TO BUY GAS AND SLEEP AND EAT...OUR GAS PRICES WOULD STILL BE CHEAPER THAN SENDING THE OIL ALL THE WAY TO THE PANAMA CANAL TO THE EAST COAST THEN BACK TO LA. AND THEN SENDING IT RIGHT BACK TO CA. TO BE PROCESSED WOULD IT NOT?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? (SMILE)

OR WE MIGHT EVEN LEARN TAHT THE ONLY PERSON TO BUILD OIL REFINIREIES IN AMERICA IS A SOUTH AMERICAN DICTATOR HATEER OF BUSH AND BEST FRIENDS WITH IRAN...NOW WE CAN NO THAVE THIS KIND OF INFO GETING OUT NOW CAN WE???? ONLY IN AMERICA...

Steve...you know I always talk about cause and effect, right...and Educate!!!Educate!!!educate!!!...

well I shall put on your blog what I was just about to use to make a new blog in ordeer to answer your questio to me ...

I see wha tis happening right now in our Christian country is God's working in "his mysterious ways" (ever heard that expression my borther)to have us take tose hate and discrimination blinders long enough to see what we have so far refused to see...

it is this country to stop abusing his name and move on to putting our trust and faith in our future into science, example, we may deny it but countries have been shut completely down by hickers not long ago...a democracy can not exist unles there is a separation of church and state...our country is run off just saying I am a Christian and hiding they have been brought and paid for by big money in America...

and, what is so funny to me is we have not realized yet taht we don't hear the word Terrorist after the shooting in tuscon or have you not heard how they are trying to avoid how this is a federal investigation and to try to kill tose who work for our federal government is called by our federal government, "DOMESTIC TERRORISM"!!!!!!!!!!!! AND NO STEVE THIS IS NOT ABOUT ME BUT IT IS ABOUT THE LAWS OF OUR LANDS...THERE IS NO WAY WE IN THIS COUNTRY CAN CONTINUE TO COVER UP WE HAVE DOMESTIC TERRORISM...AND THIS PERSON IS A MEMBER OF THOSE WHO HOLD ALL OF THOSE PARADES IN OUR COUNTRY PRAISING HITLER'S QUEST TO CREAT A MASTER RACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOW IF YO UDON'T DO ANYTHING ELSE PLEASE SEE HOW THE WORD TERRORISM IS NO LONGE USED IN OUR COUNTRY...MUCH LIKE THE WORD ***** IS BARRED FOR ITS AMERICAN HISTORY...BUT WHAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY IS THAT THE RIGHT-WING IS IN POWER NOW SO HOW DO WE GO TO WAR BECAUSE UNLIKE BUSH OBAMA IS PAYING FOR HIS ADMINISTRATION...AND READY OR NOT STEVE AMERICA NOW HAS THREE POLITICAL PARTIES...

I REPEAT THIS IS GOD'S SHOWING HOW HIS NAME HAS BEEN ABUSED. (SMILE) THE LAST THING THE DICTATOR OF EGYPT SOULD HAVE DONE WAS TO TRY AND STOP THE LITTLE PEOPLE, REMEMBER THE LITTLE PEOPLE NOT GOVVERNMENT INVENTED TEXTING AS WELL AS HACKING AND THEYHAV EYET TO BE ABLE TO CATCH UP WITH SCIENCE WHICH ONLYHAS USE FOR ANSWERIN QUESTIONS NOT DEMANDING PEOPLE BELIVE AND NOT QUESTION...LIKE TH EWORLD IS NOT FLAT AND SCIENCE IS NOT IN THE UNIVERSE NOT UP THERE IN TEH SKY WHEERE I GREW UP BEING TAUGHT HEAVEN WAS...

ALL MINDS ARE NOT WAITING TO BE PROGRAMNED...AND RIGHT NOW HACKERS COME IN ALL COLORS, GENDERS, SOCIAL STATUS, ECT.OH AND IF THE RIGHT WINGERS DO CUT OFF AIDE TO EGYPT THEN CHINA HAS PLENTY OR OUR MONEY WE SEND IN EXCANAGE FOR LEAD IN OUR TOYS BECAUSE THEY KNOW E CAN NOT AFFORD INSPECTORS...BUT THEY DON'T HAVE GOD ON THEIR SIDES EITHER NOW DO THEY NOR DOES THE MIDDLE-EAST...LOL...

OH AND CHINA MAY BE ABLE TO TELL A CHRISTIAN OR POLITICAL PARTY WHAT TO DO,,,BUT I HAVE FULL CONTROL OVER MY LIFE, "I" HAV EPOWER OF MY OWN TO THINK FOR MY OWN SELF...

@Clark, our selective memory is blocking out our president talked about the people of Egypt have the right to free speech and it is already being said how our president did not say something before he did...he is not saying what this country must do or we will come and do it for them now did he???

He did not ssay the public should put down their automatice weapons did he...what about us is it that we say we need to tell another country what they can not do but be against saying what it is they have a right to do in taking care of their affairs...and, why do we act like none of this happened in Egypt until we got our present president?...any thing about how much money we send thsi country to buy weapons and yet they can't find jobs to pay them the $2.00 a day wages?????????

we have got to start taking in all of teh information and not jsut what we like of don't like...but all of the events as this problem did not just start in egypt a feew days ago...(nup)

OR IS IT JUST ME TAHT BELIEVE OUR PRESIDENT SAID THESE PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR OWN INTERNAL PROBLEMS THEMSELVES? (SMILE)

...i AM sure our president knew as soon as he made a public comment on tis matter it would open up the flood gates for those who wants to say what they could not say until after he spoke. example,

these people can set up any kind of government they want to except it having anythng to do with Islamic faith...kind of funny because this is how I feel about the party of Christian family values inAmerica. (smile)
