Germantown’s Middle School students got to do a little side swiping when they participated in “Breaking Down the Barriers” a national program which was seen on national television and Oprah when students look closer to facing and dealing with confrontations of racial, gangs, and bullying while at school. Reviews indicated that many students benefit from the program which promotes challenges to dealing with students and peer pressure facing them in schools and at home. The program lasted for three days and will be swiped away today it’s last day. Germantown students will not be doing it today, because it got side-swiped due to school closings caused by the winter storm on February 9, 2011.

You probably remember the movie The Blind Side? Well the main character the football star Michael Oher has written his own book based on the experience of his life growing up and fighting and swiping out the odds. He’s decided to write his own version of what his views are on his life. The book’s main titled “I Beat the Odds!” Michael gives a tell all about his personality and gets the record straight that he’s not as dumb as the actor portrayed him in the movie. Michael will be hosting two book signing in the south in the upcoming week. He’ll be at Square Books located in Oxford, Mississippi on February 15, 2011 and coming to Davis-Kidd Booksellers on February 16, 2011 at 6 p.m. Buy the book then meet the Old Miss graduate and popular celebrity!

Since the last updates the story of MCS Charter is turning into what’s do we do? Shelby School Council met yesterday to try to initiate a plan to have some kind of organization to be put in place just in case the charter is to handed over to the state or the Shelby County School District. Now the state has approved a bill that will be presented to the house today whether to delay the merger of Memphis and Shelby County schools from happening for at least 3 years! The senate passed the bill and many City council members feel a bit helpless on what to do. However, voting for or against the charter still is scheduled for March 8, 2011. Early voting begins February 16, 2011 and Memphians can cast their vote. It’s not known if it’ll really make a difference since the state is looking to have a major control on the outcome of the whole side. Voters are not sure what to do either. The City or Shelby School Councils are not really making clear on any direct plans if and when the merger happens. The governor wants answers, or at least swipe out plans on the school merger to go by February 17, 2011.

OLE MISS FIELD TRIP ENDED
WITH ACCIDENT IN A
SIDE SWIPED!

Calhoun County, Mississippi
Students from Ackerman and Choctaw County schools in Mississippi found the end of their school trip in a fatal and injury accident on Tuesday as they were returning back to a field trip from The University of Mississippi [Ole Miss]. A freak accident involved a truck driver to suddenly hit and side-swiped one of the school buses and then collided head on into the second bus of students. The truck driver was killed along with two of the school’s teachers. Numerous minor injuries to students, but none of the 56 students were killed. Investigators said the scene was a mangled up mess. Traffic was slowed down to a crawl for at least 2hours. The accident occurred along Highway 8 and 9 about 40 miles from Oxford, Mississippi. Funeral services for the teachers and memorial services were being arranged on yesterday and possibly today. Again school closings in the area may delay services because of inclement weather and snow.

A winter’s storm took on it’s side swipe and dumped up three inches of snow over Memphis, Tennessee and surrounding tri-state areas. Many employees and businessess allowed their employees to swipe out early to go home . The beautiful wintry day left
a lovely pile up of accidents with at least 25 reported with the first hour. Cars were swiping into each other and with minor accidents involving swiping utility poles. The road conditions were swiping cars. In Arkansas an accident with one tragedy caused a major back-up of traffic involving several trucks which jack-knifed near Calhoun County.
Truckers took the option of parking and waiting for several hours. Mississippi highways were reported as hazardous with snowy and icy conditions related to the storm. Today’s reports indicate streets and roads are very slick and dangerous and everyone is urged NOT to drive unless it’s absolutely necessary.

West Memphis, Arkansas
A West Memphis Arkansas police officer stated in a video tape confession of swiping a camera priced at $600 on a routine traffic stop. The officer was reported by the motorist and passenger complained the officer took the camera which wasn’t his own property. Tyrone Daniels admitted to taking the camera. The officer will face felony theft charges which lead to a prison term. In addition the will be swiped of his law certifications and ending his career in law-enforcement. The Chief of Police said that this officer does not reflect his entire department and every dishonest officer is subjected to firing or punishment if caught in carrying out dishonest law enforcing of any kind.

In a similar story a Memphis Police officer, Lorenzo Couch also took a swipe of $500 cash involving two Latinos on a traffic stop. Couch resigned his police position and was arrested for robbery and theft. He first denied he did so, but later admitted he had taken their monies.
