West Point Mississippi native, Antonio Lewis II, has been appointed as the Central Regional Director of the United Negro College Fund's (UNCF) National Pre-Alumni Council for the year 2011-2012.
"It is motivating to know that I am servicing the organization that is helping me. The UNCF has allowed me to remain enrolled in college and taken the stress of wondering how I will pay for my education off of me," he continued. Lewis received a $5,000 scholarship that he applied for last fall to help with the cost of his education.
Lewis, a biology major at Stillman College, hopes to obtain his Ph.D. in pharmacology. While working towards that degree, he hopes to become a food inspector for the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
Along with his Pre-Alumni Council duties, Lewis also is an active mason and member in the Student Government Association (SGA) and Epsilon Sigma Alpha, International. He also serves as an official student ambassador for the College. Lewis is currently running a campaign for the office of president of SGA.
"It is the opportunity of a lifetime, but it is also a challenge. UNCF means a lot to me. Because of the UNCF, I am able to remain in college. To whom much is given, much is required," he said.
Currently, the UNCF Campaign for Emergency Student Aid (CESA) is seeking to raise $750,000 in additional funds to support recession-impacted graduating seniors who need to pay off balances for tuition, books and room and board before they can receive their diplomas.
To assist students like Lewis, Stillman's UNCF campaign for 2010-2011 is still accepting donations until May 30, 2011. For more information about the campaign and to make a donation, contact Luvenia Cain at 205-366-8880.
