Police on Time SquareAntiwar rallies on the 8th anniversary of America's invasion of Iraq have transformed into protests against the US-led airstrikes on Libya.
Protesters chanting “No to war!” and carrying banners that read “I am not paying for war” poured into New York's Time Square on Saturday evening, the Voice of Russia news agency reported.
Demonstrators also gathered in San Francisco, Washington DC, and other major cities on Saturday, demanding an end to the military operations in Libya.
In Washington DC, police forced detained nearly 100 activists who arranged a rally outside the White House.
The United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1973 on Thursday, permitting military measure to be taken against Libya in order to implement a no-fly zone over the country.
On Saturday, France, Britain and the US started the airstrikes on Libya firing more than 120 Tomahawk Cruise missiles and conducting bombing raids on key Libyan targets.
However, Arab League chief Amr Moussa said on Monday that the invasion was in violation of Resolution 1973, which calls for protection of civilians.
"What is happening in Libya differs from the aim of imposing a no-fly zone, and what we want is the protection of civilians and not the bombardment of more civilians," he said.
