COACH LARRY FINCH DIES
AT AGE 60

Larry Finch was a legendary coach and icon figure to many Memphians, bidded his final farewell on April 02, 2011. Reports indicated the exact cause of death has not been released. Finch suffered a debiltating stroke in 2002 at the age of 51. In October 2010 he was hospitalized for treatment of pneumonia. The prestigious coach took over coaching the University of Memphis Tigers Basketball into victories leading as the all time winningest coach of the U of M setting 220-130 record between 1986 and 1997. Coach Finch inspired many citizens of Memphis as well as gaining national attention for being the First Black Coach of the college University in Memphis ever.
He led Memphis in 1973 to the championship game as and player but as a coach for 11 seasons. Leader and Head coach led college basketball of U OF M TIGERS team to the NCAA 6 times during his remarkable career. He has received many honors in coaching as well as an active humanitarian. The 60 year native of Memphis attended Melrose High School and attended The University of Memphis and played basketball from 1970-1973. Finch was drafted by the L.A. Lakers in 1973 but decided to instead to stay home with the U of M Tigers which at that time was called Memphis State. His career inspired many far and wide and will live in memories of Memphians young and old. He passed away Saturday at St. Francis Hospital Memphis, Tennessee.

The memorial service will be held a Finch Hall on the campus of the University of Memphis from 4p-8p Friday 04.08.2011. Funeral on Saturday, 04.09.2011 at 11 am at Hope Presbyterian Church.
