Of course you weren't!
I think his reasoning probably had to do with dealing with steep racism because he was not the known as so common in the baseball sport --and being Black was considered an average way of birth in his time. He excelled from making an average man...not just so common but above. It's what I think he meant. It's how I reasoned it anyway...I don't think I was born average or common...How's that ...Ha!
